My problem seems very simple. My daughter (3 weeks old) will open wide when she's hungry and motivated. I sweep her in very quickly as I was taught, but before she can latch, her wide mouth becomes half the size and she clamps on the nipple. It's very sore.
Last night we nursed for 2 hours which consisted mostly of a bunch of on/off latching. I hate waking up to nurse, but if she just latched and ate so we could get back to sleep, I would be ever so grateful. It shouldn't take 2 hours to get about 15 or 20 minutes of actual suckling.
What do you do when that wide mouth doesn't latch? All I can think to do is keep trying...and trying, and trying. But it's been three weeks!!!
**Also, my areola is larger on the left and that's the side we have trouble on. But I don't want to get engorged and I need her to learn to latch that side. I do the pinch thing to make the areola smaller and more managaebale to her mouth...but even with that, she has a very tough time just latching and eating for any period of time.**

I would break the suction and tickle her mouth with my nipple to get her to open wide again. Keep trying, mama. My DS didn't become a pro-latcher until around 6-8 weeks, and he still has problems sometimes. It does get better.
