best way to wash wool

Thread Starter
I have a wool diaper cover that needs to be washed but I have run out of the wool wah that I got with the cover a couple years ago. I know the wool wash I had before had lanolin in it which I guess adds to the wicking/waterproof effect that wool naturally has. I also have a smal toddler's wool jacket I need to wash and would like to do them together.

Is there anything I can get at the grocery store that would be safe to use (trying to do a one or two stop shopping trip tomorrow)? Or do I have to go to a diaper store/order on-line? Or better yet, can I make my own?

Thanks Mamas!

You might be able to find Eucalan locally, and that will wash both. But, the cover may still need lanolizing.

I've also used baby wash to clean wool.

Depends on what you have available locally.

If you can't find the actual prepared wool wash, I've seen (on youtube i think) moms soak their wool in a warm water solution of a couple drops of baby wash and a little squeeze of pure lanolin (Lansinoh is the most common) for 20 min, then roll in a towel, press, then lay flat to dry.

With this technique, you should heat up a small amount of water (1/2 cup or so) and then melt the lanolin into it, mix it with a few drops of baby wash, THEN add it to a larger quantity (at least a couple of quarts) of tepid water, mixing well. Lanolin usually won't dissolve in just moderately warm water, and when it doesn't, you can get spots.

When I'm just washing wool, I use either baby wash, or Dr. Bronner's-with either a little goes a long way.

ETA: I usually use about 1/2 inch of lanolin per soaker I'm wanting to lanolize.
