When they do circs?

Ok, I think I'm right here....doctors mainly do the circs in the morning, right? I'm wondering because I'm in nursing school and I'm doing maternity next semester. :Puke Anyway....I'm deciding when to do my clinicals and I'm leaning more towards afternoon/evening instead of morning because I've always been told babies are circ'ed in the morning before discharge. So am I safe?

From what I've heard from the 2 hospitals in my area, they do them in the morning when the Dr.s are in the hospital doing their rounds. After the dr.s do their rounds and the nurses round up the babies for the morning 'check' is when they do them.

The hospital I worked at also did them in the mornings. Usually between 9:30-10:30 am; sometimes a bit earlier.

If you want to avoid circs, definitely try to get afternoon-evening clinical hrs. You will still have to deal with after care -- but at least you won't have to watch it be done, or wheel back upset babies.

Ok I thought so. I'm sure on the rare occasion for some reason it might be done in the afternoon but from what I've always known they're done in the morning. My clinical will be from 3pm-11pm. Not exactly the best times but if it prevents me from seeing babies being mutilated then it's worth it. Thanks for the reassurance!

At our hospital circumcision are done when the docs are free from their office hours, namely early a.m., over the lunch hour, and sometimes after office hours, say 6-7 pm. The best time to avoid them at my hospital is evenings and night shifts. It might be different in a big teaching hospital where there are residents around at all hours.

Good luck with your nursing training. You are in a great position to educate your fellow students and probably even your instructors. See if you can do a presentation in your class or clinical group. And then plan on using your RN to make a difference after you graduate too - write articles, speak to groups of nursing students, start a class for pregnant couples, find ways to change your facility's policies, etc.

Ours are done before 0900. I never had be involved with circ's when I worked pm's (1500-2300) It's about the only part of day shift I don't like.

I could be in the wrong here, but aren't medical professionals allowed to recuse themselves from certain procedures?

As an example: Not ALL physicians perform abortions...Those who are against refuse them, even if they are MD's of a speciality.

Again - I could be wrong, and maybe for school it's different.

Anyhoo - Best of luck to you.

Thank you! I will try to educate as much as possible, although I have a harder time in person doing so. I wish I could get over it but when the subject comes up I clam up and want to secretly strangle every idiot involved, lol.

I believe you're correct. However, a student may be different. I'm just wondering if I'll get penalized for refusing to do something if it's something I'm suppose to do. I once knew of a maternity nurse who refused and her employer was fine with it. I just hope students are shown the same mercy. I wish I had the balls to come right out and ask my clinical instructor.

Here's sending you some juju to talk to your instructor about this. Be prepared to tell her what you're willing to do (meeting her halfway) and what you're unwilling to do (and why eg. ethical issues).

You'll feel a lot worse if you get roped into watching a circ when you really had wished to avoid it. You might be surprised to find her supportive. If not, maybe there's another instructor in the program that you have a rapport with, who could speak up for you.

Good luck. Gillian

Thanks Gillian! LOL....I gotta open my mouth eventually, right? Well, my instructor isn't the same one I'll have next semester. For some reason, she doesn't teach maternity. I'm not sure who I'll have in the spring...but I HOPE she's understanding! There's absolutely no way I'll ever watch a circ! Hopefully I'm safe choosing a later clinical time.

At my teaching hospital, they are done whenever the intern and senior resident are free. Most often, this means midmorning, early aftenoon, or late afternoon. I have never seen a student nurse asked to help.
