Immune Boosters?

We try to eat well around here, with varying degrees of success). However, ds2 is sick a lot. Right now, he's on the couch with a fever. He's had a lingering cough most of the last couple of months. He's stuffed up a lot. So, I'd like to boost his immune system through nutrition. Other than getting vitamin D into him (because I was recovering from a c-section, and he can't go out without supervision, he didn't get out much this summer - I suspect the rest of the family is deficient in D, but I know ds2 and I are), I'm really not sure where to start. Omega 3s, maybe?

So - what do you recommend for immune boosters? I tend to the healthy side of a "mainstream" diet (cook from scratch - lots of veggies & fruits, whole grains, lean meat, etc.), with a hint of TF thrown in, so animal products are fine. I'm interested both in whole foods and supplements. He is a bit picky these days, but the more ideas I have to work with, the more likely I am to find something he likes, yk?

Coconut oil is an easy thing to add that works wonders for some people. I mix it equal parts CO, nut butter and honey and then chill and shape into balls. Keep in fridge or freezer. Also, at room temp it's a yummy dip for fruits.
I try to focus on lots of pastured pork as it's a good source of vit D and 2 of my kids can't get CLO down no matter how hard they try.
Raw milk seems to help, if you can get it where you are. Of course, fermented foods are a huge boost but can be tough to get into some kids. Mine love kombucha so I let them have it almost every day.
Good luck!

Start taking D3 asap.

Have you tried green smoothies? Even though you eat well, it will add even more fresh fruit and veggies to your diet.

I have to admit green smoothies kind of scare me. Maybe I'll go ahead and give one a try. DS2 just gets sick sooooo much. Of course, he's also my green-resistant kid. He likes sugar snap peas, and that's about it...doesn't like broccoli, kale (new one for us, but he's unimpressed), asparagus, brussels sprouts, spinach, green beans - nothing green. Oh - he'll eat cucumber and celery, which is fine, as far as it goes, but they're both mostly water. And, he'll eat lettuces and such with a bit of dressing.

I was skeptical at first, myself. I love fresh spinach, like in a salad - but the thought of mixing it with fruit to drink made me gag a bit. Try it, though, b/c while the smoothie looks green, the bananas (and strawberries if you add them) make it taste sweet and not spinach-y at all. My kids said they couldnt' even taste it. worth a try, definitely. I've added flax seed, a bit of raw honey, milk and a variety of fruits and greens - depending on what we had. It's a lot of good vitamins/nutrients all packed into a glass.

I do smoothies with berries, yogurt and bananas...and some honey - occasionally a few flax seeds. I just haven't tried the greens yet.

Are any greens better than others? This might be the ticket for ds2.

Fresh baby spinach leaves offer a ton of antioxidants - so, I would start there - but you can use kale, romaine, sprouts, parsley, etc. Spinach is probably the mildest flavor wise. I promise if you add enough fruit (and the honey helps, too) it won't taste icky. I bet he'll drink it up.

I'll try with spinach. DD1 is sold on my kale chips, so I can try to get her eating something else, too. She'll eat very small amounts of dark greens, but not usually a whole lot...

Thanks. I guess I'll take the plunge. The poor little guy coughed himself into throwing up today, and then started running a high fever. Now, he can't go to preschool tomorrow, so he's going to miss their Halloween party. I know I can't stop him from ever getting sick, but it concerns me that he gets sick so much more than the rest of us, yk? For example...ds1 (16) has been on antibiotics twice in his life. DD1 (6) has never taken them. DS2 (4) has been on them twice already!

Well, I put about 2 cups of baby spinach in my berry smoothie, both yesterday and today. DS2 loved it! DD1 thinks they're okay. I couldn't taste a difference. DS1 thinks I'm really weird.

So - I think we'll continue with these for a while. It's at least a step in the right direction. He's well on the mend from whatever he had.

Glad he's feeling better and that the smoothies are going over well (weird and all )

I may try that soup, but I'd have to skip the mushrooms. The kids aren't crazy about them, and I can't stand them at all.
