I just read this article and am confused...how could a baby be allergic to their mother's breastmilk?

There are a few conditions that are incompatible with breastfeeding. Galactosemia comes to mind. This is another. What a miracle, though, that she could be diagnosed and treated. Years ago, she would have died from this.

This one sounds like she doesn't have a problem with all breastmilk, though, since she's getting it from a milk bank. I wonder how it's being processed that makes it work when other bm doesn't.

I'm wondering if it's a protein or antibody or something that is being affected by the pasteurization that makes the milk bank milk okay. I'd love to know. It's so sad, though, that her insurance won't pay for the only thing that can keep her alive.

Oh, if you look at her family's blog, she actually tolerates the breastmilk. Her mom is nursing her but the energy expenditure of nursing is too much so they need to supplement her by bottle. They need the highest fat/calorie milk they can get so that's why the milk bank is important. They screen the milk and can give them the milk with the highest calorie/fat content. Hmmmm....so she's not allergic to human milk.
