PR Labs CLO NOT synthetic???

A brand of CLO made by PR labs was recently recommended to me--it supposedly does NOT contain synthetic A and D--(a major reason WAPF only has the fermented CLO on it's "BEST" list--see this link for more on the recommended brands: http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnut...-oil-menu.html)

Quote:
Quantum Cod Liver Oil provides a key source of natural Vitamin D and Omega-3 oils. Premier Research Cod Liver Oil is:
Toxin-free, USP-grade cod liver oil from Norway - not animal feed grade oil, the most commonly sold source

Rich in Vitamin D3, the sunshine vitamin; vitamin D is essential for calcium utilization for healthy bones and teeth*

Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and vitamin A to support healthy brain, memory, eyes, skin, and whole body health

Pure, un-tampered with cod liver oil that is not solvent-extracted, not bleached, not de-stearinated, and not deodorized

Mercury not detected (.005ppm)

Features live-source EPA/DHA oils for healthy memory, attention and brain function*, unlike products containing isolated DHA, which is typically solvent-tainted and highly susceptible to rancidity because it has lost its normal chemo-protective fatty acid matrix.

Ingredients:
Servings (2.5ml) per container: about 95
Each 1/2 tsp. (2.5ml) serving contains:
Vitamin A 6,250 IU (130%DV)
Vitamin D3 625 IU (152%DV)
Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) 22 IU (74%DV)
Pure U.S.P. Premium Grade Norwegian Cod Liver oil (solvent free) 2.5ml
---EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) 175mg
---DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) 253mg
Other Ingredients: none.
Contains NO: toxic binders, filler or cheap oil additives. Excipient free.
I contacted the company a/b this, asking if their CLO had the natural A and D removed and/or synthetic A and D put back in. This is their response:

Hi Lauren,
Our Cod Liver Oil is Pharmacuetical grade nothing is added and there is no processing it comes straight from the source

Amanda
I'm planning to follow up to make sure nothing is taken out--her response was so short I just want to be sure! I'll forward any other info I find out! What do you all think of this? I'm very interested in finding a non-synthetic CLO that my ds will take (he spits the fermented stuff out) and that doesn't break my budget...it would just be nice to have options!!

LMK what you all think! Feel free to write to them as well about this at info@prlabs.com

Another response from PR Labs:

Quote:
Hi Lauren,
Our Cod Liver Oil is pure from Norway. One of the only pure sources left in
the world. Nothing is added our removed. It is never heated. You can contact Healthline at 1-800-370-3447 or www.healthline.cc for more information.
Regards,
Amanda
And, I also wrote to WAPF asking what they thought of this CLO. Their response:

Hi Lauren,

We don't have the resources to go visit the manufacturing facility but
based on the available information it is a good cod liver oil.

Based on the info I've found so far, I would think WAPF would *theoretically* place this CLO brand above Nordic Naturals and Carlson's on the good list, perhaps even on the best list? I'll post more info as I find it--I'll be writing Questions@healthline.cc to find out more!

thanks for the info, will definitely be following the info.

Just wanted to let you know that both Nordic and Carlsons process their oil and remove the natural A and D vitamins in this process. Then they add them back in.

Yup--I'm aware of that--and both are on WAPF's "GOOD" list (NOT the BEST list though, of course!)

GOOD (and available in Stores):

Nordic Naturals Vitamin D Cod Liver Oil (NOT Nordic Naturals Regular Cod Liver Oil)
Carlson's Cod Liver Oil 1,000 mg capsules
They mention on that page:
Quote:
As of Spring, 2009, we recommend the following brands of cod liver oil. Sources of high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil and high-vitamin cod liver oil with natural vitamins added are in the BEST category; sources of processed cod liver oil with synthetic vitamins in the right proportions are in the GOOD category. We do not recommend brands of cod liver oil that have only low levels of vitamins A and D.
I'm excited to think there is something *better* than the Carlson's/NN's brands--maybe not as great as the fermented, but just another option!!! Fermented just doesn't fly w/ my ds, so a non-synthetic, untampered w/ option would be awesome! Perhaps it could even go on the BEST list! (A girl can hope! )

Can I ask why your son doesnt use the fermented? Does he not like the taste? I have a 3yo and was thinking of getting the FCLO capsules for myself and breaking them open for ds. Does fermented taste different than the other stuff? thanks

B/c it tastes awful...he's 2.5 and spits it out if I manage to get it into his mouth. He drinks up the Nordic Naturals Arctic D CLO happily to give you a comparison. He's not picky and eats up fermented veggies and juice kefir and lots of other good-for-you goodies...it's just that darn fermented CLO he won't take.

So, I'm always on the search for another option!!

I can't imagine what is in the capsules tastes any better than the straight oil--its just got a very strong taste. If I drip a tiny drop in my sink I feel like the very strong scent is in my kitchen until I scrub the sink clean...Maybe I'm dramatic a/b it though...

I personally just force myself to take it, (the benefits are great) but I really can swallow anything. I have only had the cinnamon kind so hopefully others have better experiences w/ other flavors? If I found another option that was not synthetic and really great, I would go w/ it in a heartbeat due to taste and price!

The CLO is already on WAPF's "Best" list, but they have it available from Radiant Life, see here, it is more expensive too. It also states that quantities are limited so I suspect when they are out that will be it for this natural CLO, as happened with the regular Blue Ice CLO. Just my hunch.

Whoah--I totally missed that!! That makes sense! Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks for the info- I just ordered a few bottles (as well as some natural cosmetics to get the free shipping). I sure hope it's not the last of the natural CLO, since there's no way my kids will take the fermented.

Update--the pr labs kind looks eactly the same as the Quantum CLO recommended on the WAPF site--I believe it is the same good stuff. So it may be running out as the pp mentioned. It was only $11 for 8 oz at my HFS so I'll use it as long as I can get it! (Haven't tasted it yet though--we'll see how ds does w/ it!!)
I was so excited to take this stuff since my kids are reacting badly to the fermented CLO. I saw that the quantum CLO has added Vit E, and I contacted the company and guess what? It is soy based. I probably would use it if it were just me, but my kids are so sensitive to soy, so oh well.

The company (Quantum, healthline.cc) also said that they are going to be out of it in a couple of months, and they recomend their DHA and D3 supplements to replace the CLO. The DHA looks like a really great and is sea veggie based, and the D3 looks awsome and a great price too. I will be going with that for now until a better option comes along.

Thanks anyway for posting about this. If you are good with it, stock up while you can.

$@#%!!! DS is soy free due to sensitivity. I took the quantum 1x so far, but have been finishing off a bottle of the fermented stuff. I'm so glad I didn't give it to him!!!

Thank you soooooo much for the info bluebirdmama1!

The call to the CLO company did drive me crazy. It went like this
"Is the Vit E from soy?"
"No... well it could be."
"is it?"
"If it is, it is the good kind of soy, not like soy milk."
"please find out for me sir."
"I will have to call you back then"

2 hours later I got the call
"yes it is soy, but the good kind."
Urgg! What is the difference if my son is allergic!!!

But the guy I talked to was nice anyway and did call me back so I am happy with that.

I found this good CLO:
http://www.gardenoflifeusa.com/Produ...3/Default.aspx

Oh wait, just saw there is Vit E added, probably soy, but worth contacting the company about.
Since we cant do the Fermented CLO, and there is no good regular CLO, we are just going to supplement with vit D, we get plenty of vit A foods, and liver, and for the good oils, we are going to use wheat germ oil. I tested that WGO would be an adequate subtitute. We will see how that goes...
Soy.... but the good kind. lol Too funny. I was so excited about this at first-- any thoughts on the soy if there are not any allergies? I generally avoid soy like the plague, but this stuff is SO CHEAP and if it's nearly as good as the FCLO without that god-awful taste, I could be easily persuaded. I'm newly single and any bit of saved money is a godsend right now.

I too avoid soy like the plague, and am really picky when it comes to my kids. But If it were myself taking it in the very small amounts daily (and not breastfeedin like I am now),I probably would go for it. If I were dealing with any sort of health issues at the moment, I may avoid it still.

To add, I got some wheat germ oil yesterday, and it is awful tasting. I gave a spoon to my 2 yr dd and she ran to the fridge begging for some nettles/alfalfa infusion to wash it down.
We are taking that and the Vit D and will keep you all updated if we see any changes with our bodies. I am giving it 1 week.

Thank you so much bluebirdmama1 for continuing to update us on your findings. It is so helpful!

blueridgewoman, just fyi, I too would take the kind w/ the soybased vit. E, but just wouldn't give it to my soy intolerant son.
