Inspecting your grain for stones?

Apparently you'll occasionally get small stones in your sack of grain, any kind of grain. And if it gets into my NutriMill, that will void the warranty (same with all the other brands I looked into.)

So how do you prevent that? It took me like 10 minutes to visually/manually sift through 2 cups of spelt. Is there a better way to do it?

In accordance with the laws of kashrut, I check my grains and flour for bugs. Not exactly the same, but .. yeah, it's a longish process! You're using a sifter, right?

What kind of sifter? Just a mesh thingy like you can get at Walmart?

You mean sort through whole grains before you grind them, right? Yes, I do it. I've found too many foreign objects, including rocks, to be comfortable just dumping it in. It might take a practiced eye to be quick at it, it doesn't take me that long any more. I dump one cup at a time into something flat, like a baking sheet, watch the stream of grain as it falls and then use my hand to shift it to the other side of the surface a little bit at a time, watching for rocks or pieces of stem or hull (I've never found bugs, btw).
