First outing diaper-free!

Wish us luck! I'm quite nervous, but yesterday I stocked up on the Gerber plastic pants(don't have the money right now for the EC store or anything, and we already have a bunch of non-waterproof trainers). I figure, what the heck, it's worth a shot! We have a lunch playdate so I really have no clue what will happen, but he's doing great at home and he usually holds it in the car now, so I'm jumping in! I'll update later when either a) I'm super proud of him or b) I need a break from all the laundry!

Arggg, not so well! First of all, I have a massive backache so it was hard for me to bend down next to the toilet(they didn't have the short kid-size toilets) to keep him occupied, so he didn't want to sit there long. He only peed twice in 3 hours, but none of it got in the potty. He also usually poos after lunch, so I took him again at that time, but he didn't go in the toilet and thankfully he didn't go in his pants either! So that's 1 good thing about the experience LOL! I think I am going to just do this every outing from now on--even if he misses, it will make him more aware, and that's my main goal with this for now.

I think I may have asked you this before, but where in Michigan do you live? We're from Michigan but are now in the St Louis area!

Hooray for diving in! My DD has been dry coming home from outings a lot, and I keep tellng myself I need to just take the dive, but I'm too chicken.

DS started doing full time undies out of the house three weeks ago. So far, no misses!

We take a potty in the car with us. Easier than trying to find a public restroom. Then again, it depends on your area - it's not ideal when there's a blizzard out! But for the warmer months, anyway.

I took my 6 month old out yesterday, and we used the potty in the car 3 times. He peed the first two times, but the third he wouldn't go. As soon as we got home, he pooped in the toilet. I think he doesn't like to poop in public!

We have only tried a regular toilet once while out, and nothing happened. I am finding the Baby Bjorn little potty in the car so much easier. I should be receiving training pants in the mail any day now - I ordered some from Sassycloth. I'm excited to start using them at home, and eventually out!

congrats! Even if it didn't go as well as you had hoped you made the plunge. Remember you don't always have to take babe out diaper free. only if you want. DD has been in underwear full time for about 3 months but every once in a while I put her in a waterproof trainer if I am concerned that a miss might cause problems (like at my sons IEP meeting and yesterday in her halloween costume). I still offer the potty and she actually has never used her trainer in those situations so it hasn't messed with her at all and allowed me to enjoy the situation better and not worry about if dd was going to pee or not.
kathy tell me how you like your trainers when you get them. I love them and you just can't beat the price.

He has gone in public toilets before, so I'm not really worried about bringing a potty in the car with us. I think that he was just in awe of everything around us--we were at a Chuck E Cheese type place(just a lot quieter and a lot more clean!!) so lots of flashing lights and kids running around.

But for those who do keep a potty in your car, how do you clean it while out? I may pick one up for longer car rides and things.

Nicole--I will have him in waterproofs for a while, believe me! We had the plastic pants over the trainers so that he wouldn't leak.

This is what happens to us - the new places are so interesting that he either pees without warning or can't pee when given the potty. So being in the car is becoming familiar territory, making it easier.

For the potty, I use a plastic grocery bag with a paper towel in it. So there is some trash, but it's less than a diaper! And I figure I would have to wipe the potty out with something anyway. i have a bag of grocery bags and a roll of paper towels in the car with the potty.

My husband read the title to your post over my shoulder and said "Woohoo! Good for her. I remember when you did that the first time." Funny, cause I don't remember it at all, myself. He says he thought it was a whole new level of brave, because you're not only "risking" a miss, you're risking public judgement. Now I find my most miss-free days are the ones when I forget to bring any back up trainers or spare pants, for obvious reasons. Good luck, keep trying!
