Wasps or bees in our house!

We've been finding the occasional dead bee or wasp in our house for a while now but in the past few days, we've found multiple dead and alive...whatever they are (they're smaller than what I think of as a wasp and don't have the hanging legs that I can see, but also not very bee like either?). I was just stung on the breast (oh joy) by one that had gotten inside my shirt - this is after killing two or three in the house earlier today and another just before this one.

I'm freaking out! I have a child and a small dog (I mention the dog because he's sometimes home alone and getting older, my daughter is pretty much right next to me all day so), I can't have stuff stinging inside our house.

If we don't know where they're coming from or how they're getting in, is there any way for us to get rid of them?

There's probably a nest somewhere in the walls or roof of your house. If you spend some time outside, especially on a warm, sunny day, you can probably figure out where they're coming in and out. If the nest is easy to get to, you can probably deal with it yourself with protective clothing, bug spray, removing the nest, and sealing the entrance. If it's hard to get to an exterminator can take care of it better than you can.

We are dealing with this at the moment. Depending on where you live the cold fall will kill them off soon. They are just looking for a warm place.

If you live somewhere warm then you will have to call pest control. You probably have a nest inside the walls...

Whatever you do don't treat them yourselves! They will just come in more!!!! Ours are gone now. But they were almost dead so easy to catch!

Are they plump-bodied or do they have defined waists? Bees are plump, wasps have those very tiny waists. If you don't know if your baby is allergic to bees (I'm deathly allergic, so this freaks me a bit), take him to someone else's home for now. If you're renting, call the landlord ASAP.

I don't know why but after I posted this I just couldn't find it again.

Anyway, we found the nest and it was HUGE - they're yellow jackets. It's way up on the front porch so we missed it when we were looking around the house. We don't actually use the front door often so we're still not sure how they were getting in.

We called pest control (it's warm here and we get very little cold weather so I can't count on that to kill them off) and they came once and sprayed it, then knocked it down and we continued to get them in the house (as many as six or seven in a day, but not so many in the past few days). Someone is supposed to be coming again today to deal with it.

Thanks for the advice.
