EXTREMELY painful letdown

Thread Starter
we've been block feeding for about 1.5wks now, which seems to be helping with the amount of milk i'm producing, now it's just a matter of HOW it's happening. my letdown is so forceful it hurts. my left breast is aching constantly due to the pain it goes through letting milk down, and it's so that latching on is painful, not the nipple itself, but around it, and LO's suckling and tugging and pulling is pretty close to intolerable, which is a huge bummer bc i was just starting to enjoy BFing

i took some ibuprofen and am applying an ice pack to the left- comfort measures, but i want to make it go away!

help?!

(((((Hugs))))) mama.

I wish I had advice - I went through this with 2 of mine and while it eventually got better it made nursing not so fun for a while.

Hopefully other mamas here will have some answers.

That sounds very upsetting! I don't have the magical cure but as your baby gets older this should improve, he will be able to handle more milk faster and not struggle so much at the breast. Your supply should continue to adjust too. Hang in there, mama!

I have very painful letdowns, too. I didn't with my older son (couldn't even feel them), so I'm very surprised by this. My baby is 2 months old and it's not getting better yet...

i do not drink coffee and we do notg have thrush. letdown burns and i get 4-5 letdowns in the 15 mins she nurses the first time on the breast, then 2-3 more during the next 15 mins. ouch. i can also spray across the room during letdown. i wonder if that has anything to do with it??? i was EP'ing the first 3 wks and letdown wasn't like this. it's become more forceful and painful once i got the baby on there!!!
