Shopping around, looking for data . . . (my answers)

What kind do you have? (FIOS)
What company do you use? (Verizon)
How much does it cost? ($50/month)
Are you happy with the service? (NOT AT ALL!)

Thanks!

What kind do you have? DSL
What company do you use? A local provider
How much does it cost? $39.95 a month
Are you happy with the service? Very much so!

In the past, we have used Earthlink, which was garbage, and Comcast Broadband, which was fraught with frustration. Earthlink had so many customers we were booted off regularly, and getting through to customer service was a nightmare. Comcast was great when it was up. When it was down, and I would finally get through to someone, every single time my broadband would be back up but we would lose the signal to our cable. No one could ever figure out why it kept happening.

I have a Verizon 'aircard'. It like a cell phone and plugs into my computer. It costs 59.99 a month, which is discounted (regular 79 bucks a month) because I work for the University.

It is our only option besides dial up, so I LOVE IT, but it is not as good as cable, DSL, ect. AND, we have a bandwidth restriction, which sucks.

We had AT&T DSL for $25 monthly up til recently then got U-verse at an employee discount, same price for us but faster.

What kind do you have? Cable
What company do you use? Comcast
How much does it cost? $52/month
Are you happy with the service? It is OK. We have had more issues with it then we ever had when we had DSL. Though the DSL (next town over) was more expensive. We have no options here. In this town Comcast is what you get. The $52 includes basic cable tv. It costs more for just internet and no tv.

What kind do you have? Local wifi
What company do you use? Pacifica.net (local provider)
How much does it cost? $15/mo
Are you happy with the service? Yes, very! We also use our iPhones a lot at home.

What kind do you have? DSL
What company do you use? local company

What kind do you have? cable internet
What company do you use? A local provider - Cable One
How much does it cost? $55 ish
Are you happy with the service? sure. It's our only option for highspeed; no comcast in our city.

we have comcast basic cable and basic internet 50 a month around cant remember exactly.

It's ok, not great, lots of problems and lots of times when its down for no reason and customer service is an absolute joke.

We are moving next month and i was looking at competitors I cant believe people need to pay 50$ for internet nowadays! If I had to guess i would say like 20 a month. We dont do tv, and use our cell phones so it's really a ripoff for us!

Before moving:
What kind do you have? cable
What company do you use? Comcast
How much does it cost? $75
Are you happy with the service? Hell to the NO. Our ver first bill had a past-due balance on it of over $300!! The people before us didn't pay their final bill nor shut it off, so Comcast expected US to. They wouldn't accept a copy of the lease as proof we weren't the previous tenants because how did that prove the previous people didn't still live there? (Um, because of the date?) The way we got around that was to call up a few days later and shut it all off, wait a couple weeks, and then my fiance called and set up new service. And even then, there were still a lot of unecplained outages, one lasting six days and I had to argue hard with them to get them to credit our bill for 20% of that month's charges.

After moving:
What kind do you have? cable
What company do you use? Time-Warner
How much does it cost? $45
Are you happy with the service? Disappointly slow with a lot of disconnection.

Now:
What kind do you have? Complex's free wi-fi
What company do you use? I think they use Road Runner
How much does it cost? free
Are you happy with the service? It's on the slow side and disconnects often, but I can't really complain. The wi-fi set-ups are in the common areas of the complex, and part of our apartment is just on the very edge, so we're lucky to pick it up at all. And it's free. Without it, I wouldn't be online at all. I do wish though that it was fast enough to stream Hulu. Oh well. I'm just glad to be online at all.

DSL
AT&T
$19.99 per month (incl. all taxes/fees)

We need a new modem. Hopefully, once that's set up, things will run a little smoother. Generally, yes, I am very happy with our service. We have a magicjack (homephone), and if someone is talking on the phone while watching a movie on Netflix, things hiccup, but hopefully the new modem sorts that out.

I am super happy with what we pay. Rather than the "Home phone, cable and high speed internet for only $100 a month! Oh, and cell phones are an extra $50 a month at the lowest!" bundle, we pay $20 for dry loop DSL, $9 for Netflix, and have TracFones that average us about $10/mo in minutes for both. And the prorated cost of the magicjack phone service is $1 a month. So $40/mo total for entertainment/communication.

I'm in Canada.

DSL from TekSavvy
$29.95/month
We love it. Better customer service, no more billing hassles, cheaper, much much more bandwidth per month. NEVER going back to Bell!!!

What kind do you have? dsl
What company do you use? Qwest - local provider
How much does it cost? $65 a month. We have a bundle package with our home phone, which is a totally basic package with no extras at all (long distance, caller id, etc)
Are you happy with the service? Yes

What kind do you have? Cable
What company do you use? Time Warner
How much does it cost? $49.95/month
Are you happy with the service? Not really. But it's currently the only game in town besides dial up so I guess I am going to have to deal with it for now.

Lack of options is why they can be so bad and not suffer for it. A Comcast rep told me straight up it wasn't like we had other options. He was right, we were stuck. I hate the monopolies these companies are allowed to have.

In a county in California, there's a lawsuit to keep FIOS from being offered (in an area of Silicon Valley) because AT&T and others claim they can't offer service as good as FIOS for as cheap as FIOS. Silicon Valley's got all this dark fiber (unused fiber optics) laid and can't fire it up.

Well, maybe AT&T/Comcast/Verizon (or whichever three it is suing) should think about offering service that is worth their price.

What kind do you have? Cable internet (and basic cable TV)
What company do you use? Comcast
How much does it cost? $56
Are you happy with the service? Sure - no real issues, no major outages, customer service/ service calls have always been prompt and effective.

What I find funny is that just cable internet is $52, but it's because they charge you $10 more a month if you don't have cable TV.
So add basic cable, and internet is discounted $10 a month and basic cable is $14, bill went up $4 a month and I get 3x's the channels than broadcast TV.
I feel it's a fair/good value for the price.
