Ammonia burn overnights

DS 1 (15 months) has a horrible blistered burn on his genitals after spending the night in cloth. Our wash routine has been consistent, and I'll strip the diapers over the next day or so, but I really suspect that the culprit (since this happens overnight) is the cover. I'm leaving him coverless throughout the day, and it clears right up, but at night that isn't an option. I don't want to have to resort to sposies, so I need links to very cheap, breathable options (anything with PUL is proving to be a problem.) We mostly use prefolds, though we have a couple pockets I try to use overnight to keep him dry. He develops a reaction faster with the pockets faster than with just the prefold.

So, if money was a major issue- meaning wool was probably out of the question what would you do for a nighttime solution?

What kind of detergent are you using? I was told recently that Charlie's can cause chemical burns occasionally.

Have you checked Etsy for wool? I just got the cutest pair of wool longies for $16. I haven't tried them out yet, but the seller gets great reviews.

I used to use Charlies, but have been experimenting for a while now as I was wondering if that was contributing to the problem. DS 2 doesn't have a problem at all- but that may be because he's so little yet (6 weeks).

I think I may scrounge the thrift shops and make a couple more pair of sweaterpants to see if that helps. If anyone has a pattern for a pull-on cover or a wrap-style wool sweater cover- I'd love if they would share it.

Also, what kind of fleece do you use to make fleece covers. What I can get locally is too thin and not dense enough to make good covers- they leak almost instantly. Anyone have a good source of fleece (need to order- I'm about 4 hours from civilization or shopping beyond the local Super Walmart.)

I would try DiaperSwappers for some cheap wool.

I had the same problem with my kids, too, at night. I don't sew so making my own covers was out of the question. (Plus I had leaking issues with fleece anyway.) The wool was the only thing that worked, plus the longies were perfect as jammie pants.

First, I'd do a major strip, and make sure they are very clean, and rinsed thoroughly.

Fleece. Any fleece will work, pretty much. I prefer either longies or fleece jammies, but there are "soakers" too (pull on fleece covers). Just steer clear of any fleece with elasic at the waist- the elastic will get damp.
I can put ds in a very absorbent fitted with just fleece jammies, overnight with no leaks. Now, he's not a major heavy wetter, but he has pee'd out of sposies overnight on occasion. (If the jammies have embroidery or cotton designs, those will get damp).

Strip, boil, strip...

If you know how to knit or have a friend who knits wool soakers are not out of the question. Or you could go to the thrift store and buy a wool sweater to hand sew a soaker. It's MUCH easier then it sounds, REALLY!!!

I use this fleece pocket for overnight with ds- he has REALLY sensitive skin and this keeps him feeling very dry and it's stretchy so it accommodates my huge inserts. http://prettyprinteddiapers.com/pretty.htm

So sorry he has a blister.

Dancing Bears fleece soaker.
