Tongue/Lip tie?

I'd have to get a finger in the mouth to know for sure about the tongue tie, but from your description I'd wonder if she has a posterior tongue tie. Check out the recent threads about this and the tongue tie sticky at the top of this forum too.

Where are you? If you post your location you may get some info about places/people who can assess for tongue tie (and who are breastfeeding supportive!)

ps There is a thread on lip ties floating around here too - try the search function

Google Catherine Genna Watson and email her your pictures. That's how we diagnosed dd's posterior tt. I think your baby's tongue looks similar to mine, but I'm not an expert. GL!

I can't say definitely that it's a tongue tie, but it looks just like my son's tongue did. He also couldn't maintain suction and made a clicking noise, and we had pretty much every other symptom you mentioned. And his latch "looked" great!

It wasn't difficult to clip his tongue - I guess it was more of a "submucosal" tie; the dentist clipped once through the mucosa layer, and once more into the frenulum.

What sealed the diagnosis in my mind was when I found out that my husband's dad and sister had "short" tongues. Is anyone in your family unable to stick out their tongue?

It shouldn't be too difficult to find someone that can clip the tongue tie (can't say for sure, but it looks like a possibility to me), but a lip tie usually is a bit more complicated. My DD had both. We got the tongue clipped at 4 weeks by an ENT and then she had the lip fixed at 6 months by an oral surgeon. It's difficult to get info on this kinda thing...but hang in there!

Email Dr. Newman - he'll let you know who to contact in Ontario. The clinic in Montreal (at the Jewish General Hospital) does diagnose and clip posterior tongue ties, but that is quite a drive, and they often want 2 visits as they prefer to consult first and clip on the 2nd visit (usually).
