HB Midwife Recommendations - Twin Cities

Hi Everyone! I know this thread comes up a lot and I've read through the archives, but just looking for any new feedback, recommendations, thoughts, etc!

We're expecting our 4th baby in Feb. Not happy with Generations midwives this time around (although my 3rd son was a good experience with them, and other two were born in another state). So we are already half way through the pregnancy, but really feeling a desire to switch our care.

After reading the archives and browsing online, I've called and left messages with Jeanne Bazille, Amy Johnson-Grass (like that she is a ND), and Rolla Crandall. I haven't met any of them before but like what I read. I talked to Jane Kirby by phone and have an appt to meet her next week.

Any more suggestions? I would like to water birth as with my last baby I didn't want to get out of the bathtub at St.John's even as he was crowning and so the midwife suggested I do a water birth next time, lol. I was very upset about having to get out of the water (it was not a birthing tub).

Anyone that is willing to work out a payment plan is very important as I can't pay much upfront, but can make regular payments.

We also need someone near NE Minneapolis, or that can get here without too much traffic delay etc, as my babies come quick. Last one was 2 hours from the first very faint contraction to him in my arms.

Thank you so much, mamas!

I birthed with Amy Johnson-Grass in Apr'08, loved her and and the care we received. She does rent tubs too, we rented, but I never actually got in (I somehow foolishly thought my labor was going to be longer than the 4 hours it was). I really cannot say enough good things about Dr. Amy!!

We had Jeanne... she is wonderful!! She is in North St Paul and we're in Mpls, but she made it in time for my fast birth... about the same amt of time as your last birth.

Jeanne B for me too, with two singletons and then my twins! All home waterbirths...I love her!

Thanks so much, everyone! Jeanne is the only one that hasn't returned the message I left, so maybe she is full already for Feb. But I will try her again and check out the other ladies, too. I got a call back from Rolla and Amy as well. I like that Amy is a ND as I have a chronic health issue that I'm curious for her input in, too!

Jeanne has been VERY busy this past couple of weeks but I am sure she will give you a call back!

My midwife was Vanessa Stephens Coldwater, and I'd recommend her to anyone - DH and I couldn't have been happier with her. Plus she does all pre- and postnatal visits in your home (I don't know if any of the others do), which I think is a definite plus.

Loved Jane Kirby! She was so upbeat and great with my 5 year old who can be very engaged.

I am seeing her too! We haven't had the baby yet, but I am really happy with her so far. She has a very gentle mindset for birth. The in-home appts are a definite bonus AND she includes a watertub in her fee.

I birthed with Kim Garrett and Gretchen Taatjes on Oct. 30 and it was wonderful. So supportive and experienced. Kim has an apprentice Laura, who's also a great support person. I recommend that team.

Amy Johnson-Grass was our naturopath and we had a difficult time working with her. She didn't explain her treatment plans well, didn't return phone calls, and didn't mail things out when she said she would. All in all, very frustrating.

I have heard some iffy things about her as well.

We use Amy Johnson-Grass and love love love her. She has really taken the time to explain things, answers all our questions and has been prompt about returning phone calls etc. I feel so supported and love her calm, gentle prescence. I would definately recommend her. Plus, I love that she is a naturopath and a midwife! She has also helped some friends and I have only heard good things from them as well. I know she is opening a birth center in St. Paul on Grand Avenue for anyone interested in birthing at a freestanding birth center.

I am very happy that we have so many midwives to choose from in the twin cities. What one person doesn't like will be exactly right for another person (and that goes the other way around). There are so many types of homebirth midwives here, which is why it is important to interview a couple of them!

I am in NE Mpls and birthing with Jeanne in March. She should be able to get to my house in about 15 minutes if she speeds, LOL. Or up to 20-30 if it is trafficy. I had a 3.5 hour labor with #1 so that is a concern for me as well. There really aren't any midwifes right near NE- you are looking at a 20min+ drive no matter what.

Anyway, I am happy so far!
