Thank you so much for posting that link!! I had no idea!!
I was given one of those slings w/a bunch of baby stuff from freecycle and now I"ll be bustin out the seam ripper and repurposing the fabric for some other creation that won't kill my future children!
ETA and I posted the link to my facebook page! More people need to know about the dangers of these slings.
I hope people realize it's just these one's in particular and not all babywearing devices...

Consumer Reports also had an article this past week regarding the Infantino Slings

CR is also against ANY slings and co sleeping and tons of other good things...so I take them with a grain of salt.

Yeah, apparently 5 babies dying in the course of 4 years is enough to say "slings are bad" .. never mind that more babies than that die in cribs every month, yet they don't get a bad rap from CR.

there is a good thread about it over at thebabywearer.com - one of the mamas there actually did tests with a variety of baby carriers testing oxygen saturation. you can have the same problem with a pouch or ring sling too if you are not wearing it properly. but of course the same thing can happen in an infant carseat if it's not positioned properly - anytime baby's chin is to chest it's going to restrict airflow. those bag slings are the worst because there isn't any way to wear them safely and the baby is so far away from the mother's head that she can't see/hear/feel baby breathing.

I usually hate any kind of news articles or posts like this but I actually agree with them. Those bag slings apart from being terribly uncomfortable are not good news.

Interesting. I wore my daughter in an Infantino sling for hours a day for the first few months of her life and even used it for the first month with my son before switching to a wrap, and I never had a problem or felt it was unsafe. My aunt gave it to me. I tried a just about every other sling out there (seriously I ordered at least half a dozen) and found it to be the most comfortable for cradle carry.

I never felt like my babies were any farther away from me or more difficult to monitor than in a pouch or ring sling, and I made sure they were never completely covered up by the sling like those pictures from the link in the OP. They were big babies though, so maybe that helped. Anyway, I'd likely use if I had another baby.

I got one for my baby shower with DD. I put her in it once and she probably wouldn't have been able to breathe had I not been holding the side of it away from her face.

They're ridiculously uncomfy too.
