Former Employer Won't Give Separation Letter?

WTH? DH needs a letter of separation from one of his employers, and no one in the company will give him one! Is this even legal? I thought employers had an obligation to give out separation letters, especially if the employee asks for one. I've done a couple of google searches, but it looks like I need to tweak my search a bit, and I've got to get DS in the tub. We're in GA. I know that the employer or employee can terminate employment for no reason at all here.

Crap like this this is one of the reasons DH no longer works there . He's got a feeling that they're going to screw around with his W2 also, and I know that BS is illegal .

Oh, and the only thing the letter has to say is what date he stopped working there. It just has to be on company letterhead and signed by a manager. It's not like he's asking to rip anyone's teeth out sans Novocaine!

That's ridiculous! Is there an HR dept or is it a small company? You might try contacting wage and hr in your state to see what you should do.

GL!

I had this problem once with a former employer (also in GA). I just did a lot of phone-calling (until I was a nuisance), and finally, I showed up in person with a letter for them to sign.

It was a pain, though. I hope it gets resolved quickly!
