It looks like it is going to be a good movie.

Saw it! It's one of the best movies of the year, in my opinion. Monique deserves an oscar for her performance. It's a must see!

Can you tell me a little bit more about it? I want to see it, but I am pretty sensitive to child abuse stories, and I don't know if it's a good idea for me to watch it. Is there some sort of a happier ending? I don't know what's happened to me, now that I'm a mom I have no stomach for tragedies, I need happy endings!

yeah i plan to see it too. it was just released where i am now.

i believe they are already talking about the oscars for the girl.

Birdie B - i am not sure about the ending. but the film is full of (from what i have read) her struggling to survive as she is abused over and over again. not sure if it would be the right movie for you!!!!

i have not seen the film, but i read the book and heard the author speak years ago. just wanted to say for anyone considering the book that it is very graphic and sad, very hard to stomach, with incest and abuse. if you have a hard time with such material, take care.

i want people to know that such things can happen (and be overcome), but i know some of us get haunted by the details.

There is physical and sexual abuse depicted on screen. It can be hard to stomach, for sure. The ending is bittersweet.

Just saw it too and if you are sensitive to sexual and physical abuse, even implied, this might not be a good movie for you.

I thought ALL the actors/actresses were amazing!!!!

Thanks. I guess I'll skip it for now. I don't think I could handle it.

I saw it tonight. It is very hard to watch, but I think it was worth it. Not just gut-wrenching, but inspiring too.

I will say that I kept it together for about half of the movie, but one scene broke me and I sobbed the entire rest of the movie. So did DP. Bring lots of tissues.

I saw it yesterday with a friend. I'm glad I brought a box of tissues! I needed them! Precious was an amazing movie. It was so hard to watch at parts, but I felt called to bear witness to these horrendous experiences, and the evolution of the title character. It was so well done! The most emotional part for me took place after her child's birth... I don't want to spoil it. But, I think so many of the mamas on here would be moved by that scene. That was definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen.

I know this thread is from 2009, but I'm bumping it....I rented this movie on DVD from the library and just finished watching it. I can't believe there's not more of a discussion about it on MDC (though I guess lots of mamas are short on time for watching movies).

This movie really stirred something in me. It made me feel so spoiled, so white, so ignorant and like I wear rose colored glasses. I never really thought about real life child abuse, incest, illiteracy, teenage motherhood, this literally. I know these things exist but I guess it never hit home with me that someone's LIFE could actually consist of such things and that they could develop their concept of the world and their own identity based on their horribly wrong home life.

This movie really affected me. I hope that I can try to see through to people and know that there is more to them than the eye can see.

I'm saying a prayer tonight for all the young women and men in situations similar to Precious candle.gif
