What is "Horn Fowl"? And why so cheap?

Our grocery store is selling a whole bird that looks like a chicken but is called "Horn Fowl"; they also sell just plain "fowl". I'm oddly turned off by this. But it's cheap and I'm wondering if anyone has tried it or knows what it is???

I googled and came up with this:
Quote:
The Arkarian horn fowl is an avian animal native to the planet Arkaria. The horn fowls flock together in the thousands, at times turning the whole northern sky (as visible from Arkaria Base) dark with their numbers. Their mating habits are of particular interest to ornithologists. During favorable months, their nesting grounds in the southern promontory could be visited from Arkaria Base on horseback via a network of trails .

When the crew of the USS Enterprise-D visited in 2369, the trails were muddy and cold. (TNG: "Starship Mine")
Could it have been a Halloween joke??

That's ridiculously funny, soooo funny, but NO! I've been seeing it for months now.

Where are you? Could they be Guinea Hens? Do you have a large African population there, that might be interested in cooking them?

I googled, too, and found a reference in a USDA report about egg production to a "leg-horn fowl." Maybe an abbreviation?

If it was a layer, maybe it was an older bird, which would explain the price. Good for soup, but not for much else, according to my poultry lady at the farm market.

Yup, if it's a leghorn, that means it's an old laying hen. She'll be pretty tough.

Great for making soup stock, though!

My first guess would be a Guinea... can't swear by it though.
