*sigh* It's for the best, I guess

My computer is a 5-year-old Mac laptop. I currently have NO MORE MEMORY, so I can't download any email or download any pictures off my camera. My battery is also completely shot so it has to be plugged in all the time. The keyboard has already been replaced.

But it is what it is, so I was resigned to keeping this thing going, y'know?

But then DANG husband went to the computer store yesterday, and found a Mac laptop on major sale/clearance PLUS a $100 rebate that expires TODAY.... and I crunched the monthly numbers and found that even though we are OVER budget, I talked myself into getting it anyway.... but when we went to the store the laptops were sold out.

So no new computer.

Thank heavens. Dang it.

Super hard BUT you can now start saving towards a new one knowing you want it so badly!

Not to try to convince you to spend money, but... you could get a 160 GB hard drive (to replace your existing hard drive) for about $125 and a new battery for about $100. Even if you paid someone to install the hard drive and copy over all of your existing files, you're still talking less than $350... considerably less than a new laptop!

I had a hard drive crash on me - fortunately all was salvaged, but I have since learned to store nothing on the PC - and burn all my photos onto disks. Is that something you could do and then delete the files off your computer? I store the discs in a fire/water safe box ($30 at target) and the whole conversion has left me feeling very secure about my valuable memories!!

I'm looking for a laptop for DS for xmas. We homeschool and I'm tired of loosing mine to ds all the time. I've noticed some on sale at 'best buy' for about $400. Not the greatest amount of memory but all he really needs is internet. There should be some really good deals with the holidays coming.

If all you need is the internet, get a netbook! They are in the $200-300 range depending on the size you want and can do anything a regular computer can do (you just can't use CD/DVD's). They're so small and compact and portable with tons of memory. I literally use mine for *everything*, even AV presentations at church. I have not touched our desktop since we got it.

A word on saving pics on disk, all my disks from when the kids were babies are deteriorating, the silver on the disks were all flaking away (and they were good quality and have been stored safely; I just checked them recently). I think for longer picture storage, SD cards or a thumbdrive would be better as they don't deteriorate. You can find them cheaply now.
