My first time leaving Gavin...

Was to take Connor to the hospital for a LOT of stitches

My husband called me while I had Ian and Gavin out at a birthday party, hubby said that Connor had fallen and his eye was bleeding a little, but he didnt think it was that bad. No big deal, we have LOTS of owies in this house with two very active (and seemingly fearless!) little boys. But when I got home, I didn't like what I saw, so I sat down with a wet papertowel to try to get a better look. When I pulled his eyelid down, his entire lid gaped open!! It was the entire length of his eye lid, so about 3-4cms. YIKES!!

Our options were...I take Connor alone and leave baby home with daddy.
Daddy takes Connor alone and I stay home.
We take Ian somewhere for the night and we both go so one of us can stay in the car with baby.

Since I've handled all things medical with Connor and am the most versed in his history (and also because I have the loudest voice when it comes to declining things like a tetanus shot ) we decided I would go and leave the baby. Luckily I had just pumped today because we were planning on trying a new bottle anyway, so there was fresh milk in the fridge.

Connor and I were gone for about 5 hours, and apparently Gavin grudgingly took about an ounce from the bottle. He's sleeping with daddy right now, and I'm not going to wake him up. I imagine he'll wake up starving when he does wake up though!!

Connor's eye looks pretty horrible!!! The cut did not go all the way through the lid thankfully, so there's no concern about his eyeball. But the eyelid is an extremely difficult place to numb (have to be very careful to not poke through the lid to the eye) and very difficult to stitch (again, can't go too deep with the needle). And because of all of Connor's medical issues, and the fact that he's currently on antibiotics for pneumonia secondary to H1N1, they didn't want to risk sedating him. SIGH. It sucked.

They got 10 stitches in, but the dr said he easily could have put many more (he said he could have put 30, but I'm sure that was an exaggeration)

So yeah...not the first outing away from Gavin that I imagined, but we all survived it at least! I'll put pictures up on my blog tomorrow if you're curious to see...beware they are graphic pictures though!!

Awww, poor Connor! I hope his wound heals up quickly and that he's not in too much pain in the meantime.

OMG - posts like this make me remember why I'm glad I only have girls, Samantha!

Poor baby guy. And I couldn't even go look at the photos.

That's all Charlotte will take out of any bottle that's not her favorite. 1oz to take the edge off and then a clamped shut mouth.

Hope Mr. Man is feeling better soon!

Lol about the girls! But you know, it all depends on the kid, because *I* had many more injuries as a kid than my husband did, heck I'm still getting them as an adult! I broke my ankle just last year when I was training for my marathon. I haven't had stitches though (aside from childbirth) but have several broken bones, lots of bad bruises, lots of sprains/strains, some torn ligaments...

His eye is already looking better, he can open it almost all the way today, the swelling is down a lot. But actually with the swelling going down I'm nervous about how they're going to get these stitches OUT!! When his eye was puffy, it was very easy to see his eyelid. But with no swelling, the stitches are right in the crease of his lid. I think it may be nearly as traumatizing to take them out as it was to put them in!! They're still going to have to papoose him and somehow get him to close his eye and keep it closed. Ugh.

We went to a party at a Jumpy Castle place today and Connor was very head-shy at first. Which is understandable of course, but I really hope it doesn't last! He has just been more on guard about other people around him. His vision is effected right now, though, hopefully once he can see fully out of that eye then he'll be back to his normal self. Caution isn't bad, but fear is!

We finally figured out how it happened, we have accordian style closet doors and at the bottom of the door is a metal hook-type-thing that latches them shut. That's the only thing in there that he could have possibly hit to cause an injury like this. If it was in his eyebrow, then I would say it was the corner of the door or maybe even just the wall (since there's a bone under your eyebrow, it's very easy to get cuts there) but this being on his lid, and across the whole length, something "tore" it. There's nothing in that closet except that hook, so it must have been that. At least we're absolutely certain now that it wasn't the dog (the dog had been in the closet with him, and my husband was afraid that she had somehow hurt him, but again this type of injury is very obviously not a dog bite or scratch, it's possible that she knocked him down or somehow bumped into him, but the metal hook is what cut his eye, not her).

Oh gosh! that's sound awful. I hope he's doing better today.
