Castaway for a 10-year-old?

We're studying The Tempest and I was thinking of showing my oldest Castaway, with Tom Hanks. I can't remember what might be objectionable though. I looked at pluggedin online and there wasn't anything that dinged my radar. The only PG-13 movies he has seen are Goblet of Fire and Pirates of the Caribbean, and he did OK with both of those.

If the whole movie is too much, could anyone suggest a couple of good scenes to watch?

Hmmm - it's been a long time since I watched it, but here are a few tense scenes that I recall:

- finding the floating body of one of the airplane crew
- using a skate blade to remove his sore tooth
- attempted suicide by hanging with the rope he made (I can't actually recall how this was shown, I just remember that it was in the movie).
- something about injuring his hand - isn't that how he "created" Wilson - using his own bloody handprint?

Depending on the sensitivity of the child, any of those scenes might be a little disturbing (aside from the whole abandoned and left starving and destitute thing...). Um, not saying that it's a bad idea to watch it, just that I don't know how your 10 y.o. would react. Mine would probably have been okay with it, lol.

A couple of good scenes are the ones where he tried fishing and learned to make fire - I remember Hanks dancing on the beach around the fire. Also perhaps near the end - figuring out how to get off the island. It was a good lesson in resiliency and not giving up.

Ooh, you're right. I haven't seen it in a long time.

Thanks for the scene suggestions! It's coming from Netflix, so maybe just watching those scenes would work.
