EC strike.. or is he losing his ability?

I've been ec'ing my baby since he was 6 months old. Until recently, he seemed on the verge of not needing diapers anymore -- we've had days when he would stay dry overnight as well as through most of the next day, for days on end. He is 12 months now.

Recently, however, he has stopped signaling altogether, and except for his regular morning pee/poop into a potty (when I sit him on the toilet right after he wakes), has gone back to wetting multiple diapers the rest of the day.

Could it be because we've been traveling (we've been on three flights and slept in four different places in the last week and half)? Could he be acclimating too much to wearing diapers? I would love to hear suggestions and advice on how I can get him to signal again (he used to do everything from whining to tapping his diaper with his hand to doing these hilarious little pelvic thrusts). These days, he occasionally whines/fusses, but only AFTER he has already peed in his diaper. More often, he does nothing, seems really happy and then to my dismay, I discover a hugely wet diaper.

More facts: He has been in disposable diapers since birth, and now pull-up trainers. That didn't seem to interfere with his EC abilities in the past... but could disposables be a culprit? Also, I've been making the sign-language "shaking fist" signal to him and making pee/poop noises with him since 6 months, and continue to this day.

This is my first time on this forum. Thank you in advance for your help and guidance!

I would suspect that all the disruption involved in travelling could very well have something to do with it. Also, is he by any chance on the verge of walking, or did he just start walking recently? We were doing well with DS, but the whole walking thing really derailed us for at least a month. I'd give it some time. And don't worry - according to those more experienced than I - he won't forget all that you've learned together.

Hi, and welcome! Exactly what curiouscanadian said! He's not losing his ability, and this strike or pause could be related to travel or walking/other developmental, or both! As for diapers or trainers, just use whatever works best for you. If your babe has been signalling all the way up to 12 months, you're lucky! A lot of babies don't seem to signal at all, or stop signalling early on. I think mine stopped her vigorous signalling around 5 or 6 months, and it's been timing all the way. We've had many times of only catching the morning pee/poop, but lately things are going quite well!

For us, things really changed quite a bit around this age. It's kind of like the "EC rules" change. He obviously gets it, but there are other things going on. It's ok if he goes in his diaper or other places besides the potty. (I had to tell myself this over and over again!)

Yes! He has been cruising and standing unassisted for some time and is probably about to bust into walking any day now.

Thank you so much for your insights and encouragement. I will just keep at it until he decides to come around again.
