Kind of scared to move to Pockets

My twins are now almost 4 months old and we are still rocking the newborn stash. We have about 3 more pounds before they outgrown them, which means about 3 more months for my slow growers, but I'm starting to think about the next step in our diapering journey.

I've been using prefolds and Thirsties covers along with an occasional fitted for my snappi challenged mother. I have to say that I LOVE prefolds. LOVE them. Love everything about them down to the fact that they can be folded and put away with one hand-- something that is a dream for a mother of baby twins, a toddler and a preschooler.

The plan had been to move into pockets once they outgrew their newborn stash but now I don't want to! I'm scared to use pockets. I've used pockets before so I know what I'm in for, but I honestly thought I'd hate using prefolds and be eager to move into pockets. I don't want to worry about leaks and trying to get poo off of them and stuffing and finding the perfect wash routine... I'm terrified of blowouts, something we've never had with the prefolds and covers. But I fear that using prefolds on mobile babies is going to be a total pain too.

So give it to me: What is it like using prefolds on mobile babies? Does the inconvenience of a longer diaper change with prefolds out weigh the inconvenience of using pockets and all of the drama that comes with them?

I already have 18 BG OS and 4 Blueberry OS and a few Fuzzibunz to use. I know I have a little while to decide, but I'd like to decide sooner than later so I can buy prefolds and covers or more pockets before we blow all our money on the Holidays. Plus, we are going to be moving across the country right about the time the twins should be outgrowing the newborn diapers so getting my ducks in a row and all of the diapers prepped before that would be really nice.

Thanks for your help!

I am a mother to one beautiful daughter Sadie 18 mths. I have been using Fuzzibunzs since she was 2 mths old. A friend of mine turned me on to cloth and after researching and trying a few brands I decided on Fuzzibunz because they were super absorbent and didn’t take forever to dry like the AIO’s. Plus I just felt like they got cleaner. I purchased my FB’s from http://www.snappydiapers.com/ a local cloth diaper retailer. The owner even let me come pick them up. She showed me how to adjust the one size fit. I absolutely love the onesize FB’s. We bought a dozen at first then upgraded that to two dozen. Sadie has been wearing them ever since and we only had one prob with one of the waterproof linings wearing out, most likely my fault from drying too much. I have found lots of useful info on clothies at http://diaperjungle.com/ their site has tons of info for the CD user. We will continue using cloth and with our future children as well!

Now I am all about the prefolds! I've got a small stash of pockets too, but they drive me crazy. My prefolds are pretty easy to snappi on him (and he is a total squirmbucket). As you already know Thirsties covers are great. Why mess with a good thing?

We only use the pockets for travelling.

I've diapered one but diapered her from about 3 months till 4.5 years through her learning to walk at 8 months the streaking toddler years the impatient preschool years ect and when all was said and done my most used system the one I kept gong back to over and over again prefolds.. DH and I got to where we HATED pockets and sold them all and DH overall liked fitted AIOs better but even he got the hand of prefolds and they were our main system. I went through seasons where I pinned or snappied or layed in covers but prefolds its was. I'd maybe get jsut a few pockets and size up the prefolds and see how things work.

i keep both around. i like the prefolds for when i need something more dependable, but dd squirms a LOT , and honestly the pockets are easier for me at those times. we have two dozen pockets and tons of prefolds and about 8 wraps that we use. i also love wool. why not just get a few pfs in the next size and a wrap or two plus the pockets and see which you end up reaching for more often?

I'm sort of with the pf voters. I mean, if they are working for you, cool. Pf's can be a little tricky on a wiggler, but for me, not that much more than a pocket. I do tend to take fitteds or pockets when we are out, though, so changes are easier and faster...

pf's are cheap and you can always use them. Pockets are more $$, so if you hate them, you'll be out more cash. You can always just get a few pockets to see, or wait until you feel that pf's aren't working for you anymore...

I say pf ive had both kinda & much perfer pf to pockets even on squrmy kiddos (which I got a very impatient 16m right now lol) They are easier in every way imo

Pockets scare me too and I don't plan on using them. They seem like a lot of work to wash. I say if you like what you're doing don't mess with it. You can also look at other all in 2 diapers like Gro baby or Flip. Although flip has mircofiber and microfiber is what takes so much work in pockets.

If you have a love of prefolds and a few fitted's why change?

Imo you are probably setting yourself up for more work with the involved stripping routines that happen with pockets.

Many of the pockets are made with synthetics, which seems to hit about a 50% increase in rashes.

Sounds like your on a good roll, pocket that cash you'll save with the prefolds and covers and tuck it away for some fun summer activities with the kiddos next summer.

my two cents.

anyway......................way to go for doing cd's with twins!

We use prefolds a lot at home when I can change ds frequently (heavy wetter and I don't like the moisture next to his skin) but use pockets when we go out so I can leave it on longer and he won't be wet next to his skin.

Ds is a huge wiggler and I do get annoyed sometimes with trying to do the pf while he tries to walk/jump/run/crawl away but if you love them otherwise it might balance out for you.

I definitely love how easy it is to clean poo out of the pfs and then sun the stains out of them.
