I never have. I don't hold babies well in my right arm anyway, so it's awkward to nurse on that side. I have oversupply, and my right has always produced even more than my left. Every time I've had mastitis, I get it in my right boob. I often have plugged ducts on that side.
Recently when we all had the flu (man it was horrible!!) I think Gavin got a bad latch one time because suddenly my nipple was sore. Then it was REALLY sore. It felt like nipple trauma of some sort, but I coulnd't find anything wrong with it. Then, because it was hurting so much to nurse on that side, I was favoring my left, and I got bad plugs on my right. So I pumped a few times to try to get the plugs out, which helped, and pumping didn't hurt my nipple as much either.
Well with nursing two, I can't keep pumping my right, so I started nursing on that side again, and it's EXCRUTIATING!!! Like I seriously have to breathe through it (yay for natural labor teaching me breathing techniques!) I finally stood in front of a mirror last night and examined myself really closely...and I know why I hurt so much. I have a slit/crack under my nipple, right where my nipple meets my areola. It goes the whole length of my nipple, too, so no matter how I position Gavin, his tongue is rubbing against it. OUCH.
I've been doing lanolin and since I found the wound, neosporin. Other than that I've just been toughing it out (and dreading every other feeding when I have to put him on that side!!) Now is when I really wish he would take a bottle better so I could just pump for a few days to let myself heal!!! There's blood on my nursing pad today
With Ian and Connor both I eventually weaned my right side and nursed only on my left since I just don't like my right, but obviously it's way too early to do that this time (and with Connor nursing so much, that would be bad to lose half my supply).
Fun times.
