Thrush???

o.k. I think I'm being paranoid, but...

Ds is 15 days old and has had a bright red rash on his bum since Thursday (that's 5 days). my midwife said it looked "yeasty" and suggested i put i the whey of plain yogurt on it. i did that for four days with little improvement. today I started an over the counter micocnazole cream.

I'm afraid that due to the antibiotics from the c-section he's going to develop oral thrush. I've looked in his mouth and his upper gums look more yellow, not white and patchy. but he does have two distinct white dots on one side and one straight back at his throat. could this be the early onset? the dots are the size of a pinhead. I never had this with dd so I don't know what to look for. and would hate to expose him to the peds.

is there any harm in GSE as a precaution?

any advice would be appreciated. Also He's just starting to get fussy, gassy, I've already eliminated dairy.

You could try putting him on some infant bifidus. Baby jarrow-dophilis is one I would recommend.

If he does have thrush in his mouth, you'll feel it soon enough! IF this does happen, the absolute ONLY thing that has ever worked for me is the gentian violet. You dip a qtip in the GV, swab it around his mouth and then nurse him. That will take care of it on your nipples and his mouth within a day or two. As far as his bum...do you think it could be something he's allergic to? What are you using for diapers? We had so many issues with my daughter on her bottom, even with the cloth diapers...she just has SUCH sensitive skin! I know how frustrating it can be. I hope it goes away for him soon!

OH yeah, if it's yeast...my midwives told me that if I drink a little bit of liquid chloryphill each day, that will keep away any yeasty problems.

What's GSE?

Are the pin-spots on his gums? If so, they could be Epstein Pearls. Those are just deposits that look like little teeth. Both of my last 2 babies had them. Also my last baby and this one have had thrush. With DD, her tongue was coated white. I thought it was milk tongue. Then my nipples started itching and became flaky. I happened to mention it to a nurse and she told me to get checked. Sure enough. With this baby, I recognized the beginnings of the white tongue at 10 days and jumped on it. I take acidophillus capsules and eat lots of yogurt to help reduce the yeast. My oldest DS had problems with diaper yeast too. The pediatrician gave me an antifungal powder that I would sprinkle on his diaper area. You can tell a yeast rash because it does not respond to diaper creams. Usually with a regular diaper rash, a diaper creme will make improvement rather quickly. Also sometimes yeast looks crusty.

With my DD, it was very pervasive. With this baby, I caught it early so the Nystatin worked. If you are nursing, you have to treat both yourself and baby. If you do a search on Mothering.com there is an article I found the other day that talks about natural remedies such as vinegar. With my DD, we used Nystatin, gentian violet and ended up on a month's worth of Difulcan. It took 8 weeks to get rid of it. So if you suspect thrush, act quickly. This time we used Nystatin creme on the nipples after each nursing. I had liquid Nystatin for DS and I used a q-tip to wipe it on his tongue and cheeks 4 times per day.

The nurses explained that yeast lives on our body but thrush is yeast gone crazy. So you never really get rid of it. It just gets brought back into balance. It can be very frustrating though. Sorry for the ramble. I hope this helps though.

Here is a link to the article I mentioned. The suggested remedies are towards the bottom. http://www.mothering.com/good-news-b...venting-thrush

We have thrush, too. Sigh.

We have it too. We're on GV (day 3) and we started a probiotic tandem treatment - babydolphus (sp?) and Primal Defense Ultra for me. The pain in my nipples is awful plus the past two nights he's been extra fussy and cluster feeding (two or three feedings in two hours). So no sleep and painful nipples is making things unpleasant over here

I was just told by someone who has a lot of experience to use calendula (mix tincture with an oil such as olive oil) on my nipples and some coconut oil, also lots of biotin for mom as well as probiotics. With ds, I used nystatin, which worked temporarily, ditto with gentian violet (I've heard it has coal tar in it or something), so we aren't going to try those this time. Green juices are supposed to help strengthen the mama's system (alkalinzing).
