cord tie options and some rambling

i plan to do a lotus birth like i did with dd but now, for some reason, am starting to think about the possibility of "what if i need to cut the cord" and i don't have cord clamps. will a piece of wool string work to tie off the cord? i always thought that dental floss was an option but this article i was just reading said :

Umbilical tape, dental tape (not floss) or even braided embroidery flosses have made excellent "cord clamps" for many babies.
i think what we have at home is dental floss not tape.

i am pretty close so i don't have time to order any supplies.

last UC/lotus birth was perfect. and while i don't feel any intuition that this birth won't be perfect, i feel more of a need to be prepared for the worst.

I crocheted a wool drawstring for DD2. I figured of all the strings out there that one had the best qualities for practical reasons. Her's fell off faster than DD1's but I can't really say it was from that. I plan on doing it again.

i have a roll of wool string so could i just wrap it around several times and then tie it or would it have to be crocheted to make it thicker? it is the size of normal yarn now.

Thanks for asking this. I've been wondering the same thing myself.

I just crocheted it for the pretty factor honestly. It was one of those mindless things I wanted to get "done" as part of preparing and getting things set aside. It wouldn't matter really. Mine was more of a thick and thin (Manos del Uraguay yarn). I made mine longer than was neccessary. This time around it'll definitely be shorter.

For my first, I braided some embroidery thread that was pretty. He wasn't born at home though
My third, I had a lotus birth so I didn't need anything.

Mostly if you're going to NEED to cut it, it will be because it's too short though.

I bought from InHisHands and it was here in two days. They ship Priority Mail so if you're in the US, unless you're super close, that *could* work if you need any extras too.

we should be fine in that regard cause dd's cord was less than one foot long!

the reason i was thinking about having to cut it was if it was twins (which there is like a 1% chance) or i read something about need to cut it if it was wrapped around the neck, but i know that every birth story i read they say that when i comes out you can just unwrap the cord with no trouble.

so, i am just trying justify to myself that i am prepared and responsible. it all has to do with my m/c. when i birthed dd everything was perfect and i didn't really doubt anything but then after that i had a m/c that sorta brought me back to reality but has also given me more reason to doubt this time.

last night i prayed for about 3 hours and really tried to get myself into the mindset that i need to be in before this birth will happen.

as far as ordering supplies and getting them here in 2 days... that may get them here on time and it may not. :

For short cords, my understanding was the they're usually not a big deal- the uterus moves down as the baby moves down, and once the head is out you can just "somersault" the body out (keeping the head close to your body) and then unwrap from there.

I'm thinking I'll use shoelaces- I'll buy a "cool" pair I'll just boil them up and keep them in a baggie in case we need them. We plan on waiting a few hours before we cut the cord so we probably won't use it, but I'll have it on hand JIC. We do have dental tape (floss = string, this stuff is wide and... well, tape like!) but I like the shoelace idea better for whatever reason.

I think doubt and questioning are normal, especially after a loss, but I'm glad you've got something to turn to that gives you peace and comfort.

that's what i did with dd...i bought black and white checked shoelaces and started them boiling when i started pushing...they were kind of a PITA because they were thick and didn't stay tied very well, but they got the job done.

my friend braided some embroidery floss for me this time around...i'm actually hoping to not have to use it and wait til the cord is white and empty, but we'll see...

Anyone have any descriptive resources for cutting and tying the cord?
The where, the how, etc...
