S/O Making "luxuries" frugal? - Page 2

Our luxury is travel-we spend an insane amount of money each year, but it's something we really enjoy. Even though we spend a lot of money, I make sure we get a good value. We probably get twice as many trips because of the bargain hunting I do.

Instead of saying, "We are going to Germany this summer," we have a list of possibilities which are all places we want to visit. So maybe Germany, London, Cancun, etc. are on this list. Then I track airfares, hotels, combo packages, etc. It takes time and patience, but eventually something will pop up that's an extraordinary deal. Then I book it. We have the luxury of being flexible with dates, so we can go during low season. For the hotel, I am willing to pay a little more to stay somewhere nice and in a good location (vacation is no fun if you spend half your time on the subway) but again I scour and wait for a deal. We do have a loyalty program with a particular chain, but we don't always stick to them if they are way more expensive.

My luxury is Smartwool socks. I buy childrens larger sizes, instead on womens smaller sizes, and it costs less. I also keep an eye out for them on the REI website. You can have things shipped to an REI store for no shipping cost, and the clearance and outlet sections often have the socks for 50% off.

my luxuries are knitting and sewing. I sign up for all the mailers from Joann and Hancock and almost never pay full price for anything there. To make knitting more frugal, I'm learning how to dye my yarn. It's super easy to dye protein fiber with nothing but some cheap food coloring and white vinegar, and bare fiber is much more cost effective than the gorgeous multicolored yarn I'm always lusting after.
