Spooky read-alouds?

My ds (5) loves anything mysterious and spooky! He is not reading on his own yet, but I spend hours every day reading books aloud to him. We both love it! I'd love to get some new books to surprise him with.

Can anyone recommend any spooky, mysterious books?

We haven't done chapter books yet, but would like to. I'm open to all suggestions! Thanks so much!

That's my boys too! Every time we go to the library, they check out a giant pile of Halloween books, no matter what time of the year it is.

A few of our favorite spooky books were The Little Broomstick by Mary Stewart; Harry Potter series (I think we read the first one when ds was 4 or 5, but had to hold off a bit for the others); Roald Dahl's The Witches (a really good 'starter' chapter book). My 8 year old and I have been enjoying both the Charlie Bone series, and Septimus Heap books which are kind of magic-wizardy books, so maybe an idea to file away for later. Used book sales (especially if your library has one!) are great places to find older paperbacks on the cheap. We've found a few spooky retro books that way.

[i]Bunnicula[/q] and sequels by James Howe are a lot of fun.

Thank you both for these suggestions! They sound wonderful, and I'm going to add them to my constantly growing wish list for books!

Any more suggestions?

The Dorrie series by Patricia Coombs are fantastic -- they're out of print, but any good library should have a few. Also, the Green Knowe series by Lucy Maud Boston. A little boy stays with his mysterious great-aunt on school vactions and makes friends with ghost children in her house.
