I need to buy a new set. There are plenty of general reviews out there, but I want to be sure whatever we get will work well for diapers.

I have a GE Profile (top loader, but that's what I prefer) and I like it pretty well. Wouldn't have been my first choice but hey it was affordable!
Things I like about it:
it has auto load sensing so you don't have to select the load size
it has settings for 2nd rinse, extended spin, extended spin+2nd rinse
it has a screen that tells you which part of the wash cycle it is in and how long until the next stage

We have a Whirlpool front-loader. I love how it works, love that it doesn't use much water, love that my washer isn't ripping holes in my clothes. It's worked great for more than 2-1/2 years of prefold diapers, with some of that being 2 kids' worth. What I don't love is that mysterious bits of plastic have been breaking off the front of it and off the door, and it's only 5 years old. It also gets really stinky if we go a while between loads in the summer (barely ever happens anymore, but did before the kids). If you consider a front-loaded, I recommend doing some reading about the stinkiness problem, which is basically mold/mildew in or near the seal.

Our washer just died and we purchased the Samsung 218. We went with it because it wasn't belt driven. It's super quiet and has all of the features we needed: prewash cycle and a wash cycle with additional rinse. It's extremely smooth when it spins, too. We love it so far! As for the issue with mildew on the front load, just leave the door open and it'll dry out. Happy shopping!

Unlike many I did not jump on the front loader craze.
I wanted and prefer a top loader.
I purchased a High Efficiency Fisher and Paykel set. Cost me less than a front loader washer, uses the same or less water than a front loader, and the clothing spins out at
1800 rpm (sounds like an airplane) and the the clothing needs little time in the dryer.
Plus, unlike most washers it comes with a full TWO year warranty.
