Bed rail safety question

My 28 month-old son has recently requested to sleep in his own bed, and has been doing so (at least for part of the night) for the past few weeks. The problem is that the bed is a platform with drawers underneath, and no box springs. I tried lining the edge of the bed with pillows, but he is a squirmy sleeper and has managed to fall off of the bed twice already. A friend of mine gave me a bed rail, but the warning on it says only to use it on a bed with a mattress and box springs.

His room is small and there's no way I could put the mattress on the floor, and he wants to sleep in his own room because he likes the decor.

Has anyone ever used a bed rail on a bed like this? If I can get a secure fit, do you see a problem with it? Thanks for your help!

We think we figured it out. Thanks anyhow.
