Any International School Teachers out here???

I am getting ready to hit the International School teaching 'circuit' for next year.

I was an ESL teaching intern at the American International School of Rotterdam from 2001-2002, but stayed in Holland for another 3 years working in publishing.

Since then, I have gotten my Masters and multiple subjects certification, in addition to being in my third year of teaching in Oakland, CA.

I am planning on attending the ISS Recruitment Fair in Boston in February and am reconnecting with some former colleagues from AISR.

So... how's the climate in the international school teaching world right now? Can you share any experience you have had at any specific schools?

We are! We went through ISS two years ago and landed in Brazil. We're super happy here. We plan on staying at least another few years. We were able to come to a school with good housing in an awesome complex, excellent childcare (we have a great nanny), Montessori preschool on site, etc...

This was our first assignment so it is difficult to compare how hiring is this time around. Others have said that as the economy changed so did the hiring-more competitive now. I think it depends on how many dependents you have, your certification, and where you are looking.

Good luck! It is such a wide open, exciting process!

How exciting! And, I am so happy to hear that you enjoy it there.

So, now I am about to rattle off 20 questions...

Are you both teaching, or just one of you? How was the ISS process? Did you attend one of the recruitment fairs? Why Brazil? Did you receive other offers?

I'd love to do this, but my certification is K-12 special ed. Recently all my jobs have been in admin/teacher coaching/curriculum writing. Do you think there's a possibility I'd find something in an international school? If I do would they allow DS to attend the school without paying some astronomical tuition?

When I was at AISR (American International School of Rotterdam), they did have a sped teacher. Although, because it was a smaller school... she often did more than just sped.

Check out ISS.

Most children are able to attend the school either tuition free or for reduced tuition, it depends on the school and the contract they offer.

The key is to search out the best contract. And let me tell you... there are some pretty awesome contracts offered. Granted, there are also a lot of crappy contracts too.
