Possibly weird raw milk question

We are going to be getting raw milk starting in a few weeks. It will be whole milk, obviously, LOL.

The thing is, DH and I can't stand the taste of whole milk. We both will only drink skim (even in cereal). I have heard people say raw whole milk tastes fine, but seriously I would gag if I even tried it, it just isn't going to happen. ::shudders::

DS, however, is underweight and could really use all the good fat he can get. I am wondering if I could skim the fat off some of the milk, for DH and I, and add it to DS's milk.

Would that work? Does anyone see a problem with doing that?

We get raw milk and, while we love full-fat milk, I do sometimes use the cream for other things. To do this, just let the container of milk set in the fridge long enough for the cream to come to the top, then carefully pour it off. What you will have left will still be fattier than skim milk, but it will be closer to what you are used to. I hope you like the taste of it. I think raw milk tastes so much better than pasturized. The taste of raw milk should change a bit according to the season and what the cows are eating. Oh, something to remember: once you remove the cream, the milk won't stay sweet as long as if the cream was left on. At least, that's my experience; I'd love to hear what the others have to say. Good luck!

You might be surprised that you like the taste. I didn’t like the taste of any milk until I tried raw for the first time, and it is sooooo good! Now I'm a huge milk fan

I know I totally didn’t help with your question, but I wanted to throw that out there.

I was thinking the same thing... I used to HATE milk, and would only drink skim (or soy, gag!)... but I LOVE the taste of raw milk now and I don't think I could ever drink skim pasteurized again!

Now I have a question to add to this, LOL! We will be getting raw milk by the end of the week and Ive never had it before let alone even seen it. When it is in the fridge and the cream seperates...do we shake the milk to get it back into the milk? Or how do we go about this? Do we just pour it into our glasses? Is it chunky? LOL! IDK???? Also how much should I get at once? I can go to the farm only once a week.....it is $5 a gallon....I think I am going to get 3 gallons. Will this last one week or is that too much>?
I am also thinking of taking glass canning jars to have them fill up...is this ok too? Will the metal on top bother the milk at all?

My daughter doesn't like full fat milk so what I do is skim the cream and put it into another jar, then add it back into my milk when I drink it. (or use it for other things!)

And yes, we just shake the jar if the cream has risen, before we pour. No it isn't chunky, but it isn't as smooth as store bought somehow - there are little picky things that kind of cling to the glass as you drink it, so you can tell it's raw just by looking if that makes sense. It's also yellower than store bought.

I'm new to raw milk (started drinking this summer) and my family LOVES it. I do find, like BedHead said, that raw milk is not pure white. Lately the milk has been yellowish and creamier...the farmer told me that it's the type of grass the cows are eating now...and it's been better than ever. However, if you prefer the runnier skim milk, you may want to skim the cream first.

The farmer provides the jars (we return the empties), and those jars have metal lids. I do not think the lids harms the milk at all. For our family of three (I have a 2yo son), we drink about 1.5 gallons a week. Some weeks I buy 2 gallons. Then again, we work full-time and my son goes to daycare, so we would probably go through more milk if we were home full time.

And yes, you shake the milk every time you use it to ensure even fat distribution (if you haven't already separated the cream into another container). Like BedHead mentioned, raw milk leaves a spotty film behind in glass, but you shouldn't be able to detect them when you drink.

One thing that surprised me when I first started drinking the milk -- I was used to pasteurized, grain-fed milk, so when I started drinking raw, grass-fed milk, I wasn't used to the grassy aftertaste. Just keep that in mind that you may taste it too.

$5/gallon seems like a steal to me. I pay $8/gallon.

Good luck! Hope you guys enjoy it as much as we do.

I was raised on skim milk and hated whole milk. Honestly I kind of always hated milk, but just used it in cereal.

When DD was a toddler we got pasteurized whole milk for her. I hated it too. I stopped eating cereal for a while because I hated it so much, but had some a few times in a pinch and it grew on me.

Now I drink raw milk. Fortunately the whole milk already kind of grew on me, but raw milk is the only milk I'd be able to tolerate drinking in a glass - which I could never imagine myself doing before. It does taste a little different, but even that can be overcome with attitude. I felt like the differences I tasted were GOOD ones - like, oooh, look at how yellow this milk is, that's how nutritious it is! And the taste, too, I'd be thinking "now this is what REAL milk tastes like." It's easy to get used to a taste if you're convinced it's so good for you.
