Used pump question(s)

My step-sister got a used Ameda Purely Yours breast pump off Freecycle, she also got a used Medela at a garage sale. She has decided to keep the Medela and give me the Ameda. We have no idea if either of them actually work. The Ameda makes noise when you turn it on, it's not quiet by any stretch of the imagination, lol. How do you check to see if it has suction without using the used bits on yourself, kwim? I know you can order new parts, but I'm not sure what I need, where to get it, or if I should even spend the money if the pump ends up not even working. Any advice?

If you are just testing it for suction I don't see why you can't just boil/sterilize the parts that came with it and test it. It's not like you're putting milk in that your baby will drink. Also, if I remember correctly, the Ameda Purely Yours...has tubes which are guarenteed to not get milk in. Maybe it's just one model they make, but double check.
