He has all the "normal" signs of a milk allergy/intolerance... red anus, rash, severe constipation, reflux, congestion, etc. That all disappeared within a day or two of removing him from the formula.

The commercial formula was only ever a short-term solution for us, though... We eat whole foods and a more traditional diet, and the extreme processing of the formula never sat right with me. These aren't things that I would put in MY body, so I really object to putting them in his. Which is why I'm headed into the kitchen in a few minutes to measure out the big pot of stock into individual bags and freeze it. I should have about a week's worth of stock - the formula takes about a quart a day. We'll be starting him on the stock based formula in a few days when the milk runs out. And we'll trial goat milk formula in a bit as well, since I have 5 gallons of goat's milk in the freezer. Hopefully he'll tolerate goat's milk better than cow's... but regardless, we should be able to keep him on the broth based formula indefinitely. The hardest part will be that good chickens are seasonal here and the season ends pretty soon.

I'm fascinated by that....where do you find info on homemade formulas? Do share! And I totally understand your reluctance, I guess I just never knew there was a WAY to make it myself....short of being able to nurse full time, I figured I had to use formula, yK?

You can get the recipes on the WAPF website, it's in Nourishing Traditions, or there's a pamphlet with the recipe you can order from RL. And the ingredients can be ordered from Radiant Life - they actually have a premade package with all the ingredients except the base (milk/broth). I got the box from RL last week, and I have the rest of the stuff on hand (like to use goat's milk you also have to add raw chicken liver for B12 which has been frozen for 2 weeks... I bought and froze it about a month ago now).

The only thing I'm missing is the Piima culture, which isn't required if you use raw milk.

I'm trying to avoid even the homemade formula if I can, but if it comes down to giving him a meat based homemade formula that I made from scratch or a powdered store-bought formula that I know he's going to have a bad reaction to - it's not much of a question.
