Anybody make their own ranch? Care to share your recipe? I tried one and it's so-so....

My husband and daughter would really love it if I learned to make a Ranch dressing, too....

1 clove garlic
Salt to taste
ÂĽ cup fresh chopped parsley
2 tbsp fresh chives
1 cup mayonnaise (I can share my recipe if you like)
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup Buttermilk (as needed to desired consistency)
1 lemon worth of juice
1/4 tsp worcestershire sauce
1/8 tsp Paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/8 tsp Tabasco

Mince the garlic with a knife and then sprinkle about an 1/8 to ÂĽ teaspoons of salt on it and mash it into a paste with a fork. Chop the parsley, chives and any of the optional herbs very finely and add to the garlic.
In a bowl combine all ingredients, adding other optional ingredients as you wish, tasting frequently and adjusting seasonings as needed. Chill for a couple of hours before serving, thin with buttermilk to desired consistancy.

Other ingredients that I've added are fresh dill, thyme, a splash of vinegar, fresh oregano... it just depends on what fresh herbs I have and what I'm serving it with, but above is the master recipe I always follow.

How long does that keep for? Do you need to use it immediately, or can you store it in the fridge for a few days?

I'm sure it would last for a couple of days in the fridge, it just never does in our house!!!

I made this recipe over the summer to use as a veggie dip and I liked it! It is the only homemade version I've made though. I did use 1/2 c mayo, 1/2 c sour cream and 1/2 c buttermilk as suggested in the comments (instead of just mayo/sour cream).

I used it up within a few days

1/4 c water
1/2 c plain yogurt
1/4 c mayo
juice of half a lemon or 1 1/2 T white wine vinegar
1 tsp salt free all purpose seasoning
1/2 tsp dried dill

Whisk all ingredients together. Keeps for a week in refrigerator. To make a thicker dressing or dip, adjust amount of water used.

Kids love this recipe!

1 cup mayo
1 cup sour cream or greek yogurt
1 TBL lemon juice
2 TBL olive oil
2 tsp minced onion
herbs to taste: garlic, parsley, basil, dill, salt and pepper

Blend together in blender, processor or with immulsion blender.

For everyday use, I make up one with dibs and dabs...

1 part sour cream
1 part mayo
then season with: A-1, Texas Pete, Italian seasoning, cajun seasoning, pepper, garlic powder, dill, and sometimes onion powder (just shake to taste)

If it's for dip, I live it as is. If it's for salad, I thin with water or milk.

1) Buy Club House seasoning packet.
2) Mix with sour cream and mayo.
3) Enjoy.

(that's how I make homemade ranch....)

But here's a recipe from PioneerWoman that looks yummy:
http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2...anch-dressing/

Pioneer Woman’s Homemade Ranch Dressing
1 to 2 cloves garlic
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (use less table salt)
1 cup mayonnaise (Hellman’s or Best Foods preferred)
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 to 1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk, to taste
1/4 cup chopped flat leaf parsley
1 to 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
1 to 2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill, more if desired

Optional ingredients:
white vinegar
worcestershire sauce
cayenne pepper
paprika
fresh oregano
black pepper
tabasco

Directions: With a fork, make a paste with garlic and salt. Mix all other ingredients, adding optional ingredients as you wish, tasting frequently and adjusting seasonings as needed. Chill for a couple of hours before serving, thin with milk or buttermilk if desired

Subbing

Would these recipes be okay if I used dairy free versions of some of the products?

We're not dairy free, but I've subbed soy or rice milk in many recipes and had no problems. Soy/rice milk, soygurt and veganase? (sp?)

Here are my two basic mayo recipes that I use all the time:

Bacon Mayonnaise (my favorite)
Makes about 1/2 cup

Ingredients
1 egg yolk
3/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup liquid bacon fat

Method
Combine the egg yolk, mustard and lemon juice in the small bowl of a food processor or in a blender and process to mix. Season with salt and pepper.
Have the bacon fat liquid, but not hot. With the machine running, gradually the bacon fat until the mixture starts to stiffen and emulsify, about 2 minutes. Once it starts to emulsify, you can add the fat more quickly. If the mayonnaise is too thick, just blend in a bit of cream, or coconut milk would work too I'm sure.

and:

Olive Oil Mayonnaise
1 large egg
1 tsp dry mustard
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp ground cayenne pepper
1 tsp maple syrup
2 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
1 1/4 cups olive oil

In the bowl of a food processor, blend together egg, mustard, cayenne, sugar and vinegar until very smooth. Leaving the motor running, drizzle the olive oil in very slowly, until mixture is thick and creamy. Scrape down the sides of the food processor and blend again to ensure that all ingredients have been incorporated before transferring to an airtight storage container.
This will keep for at least a week, in an airtight container, in the fridge.

Makes about 1 1/2 cups.

I loosely followed your recipe using store-bought mayo this time. YUM!!!!! I never knew Ranch could be so easy and SOOO delicious!!!! I don't usually even eat the Ranch. DH & DD like it, though, and we're out so I asked them if I could make one. DD liked it so much she asked if she could take some to school tomorrow as a dip for her veggies. I put a bit of mayo into a tiny container and added a dollop of the homemade Ranch dressing and stirred it up and handed DD the spoon to lick and put into the dishwasher. She wanted to the eat the whole container right then and she has never liked mayo before.

Thank you!!!!

Yay!!! I'm glad it was a hit. That's the nice thing about ranch (and any other dip) loosely following the recipe and making it suit your own tastes is what it's all about!
