TF and oral hygeine

So I was wondering what all you TF mamas do/think/know about oral hygeine.
How do you differ from the mainsteam if at all?
What do you brush with, storebought paste or other?

I read something by someone on the dental forum about swishing yogurt in your mouth after eating, would that have benefits?

Thanks for any and all input!

I kind of swish yogurt around, it can't hurt, right? I also encourage cheese, usually as the last food of the night. Hoping it ind of helps with small children and their not-so-great brushing techniques.

There is something called oil pulling that is TF *I believe* (not certain) but I don't know anything about it. (You can search the archives for it though.)

We use a non-flouride toothpaste here, that's all.

I read somewhere once that apples and carrots are nature's toothbrushes. We still brush normally though, but if DS is hungry after brushing, I let him have apples/carrots. I'd be okay with cheese too, probably.

I make toothpaste with coconut oil, baking soda, tea tree oil and peppermint oil. I mix the bs and co about half and half until the bs is disolved then add a couple of drops of tto and then peppermint oil to flavor.

We use a homemade baking soda tooth powder. But honestly, I sometimes just brush with the toothbrush. What I've discovered is that my breath improves within a day of stopping using commercial or tom's toothpaste was my previous natural toothpaste, and switching to baking soda or just vigorous brushing with a toothbrush.

Now I admit, I don't have a dentist atm (I need to find one lol) so I don't know if this is a good thing, but it seems to be ok...

We use tooth soap here. Good stuff, all natural. What brought me to TF in the beginning was ds' teeth, and we got a bunch of stuff from dentist.net (on CREDIT! ) that we want to use up. I think we got a few of these, fluoride free version. Some xylitol stuff too. But - I regret getting all this stuff, and want to just stuck to the tooth soap.

This sounds awesome! What does the tea tree oil add/do? (I have all the other ingredients so just wondering--I might mix some up myself to try it out )

TTO is in a lot of natural toothpastes and mouth washes, it's anti-fungal and anti bacterial. I'm thinking of leaving it out now though because I really don't like throwing off the natural balance of bacteria in or on our bodies.

I totally agree and would not use it.

Thanks for the info on TTO both of you.

There is a great thread on bentonite clay and pascalite in the healing forum. Goes into all the uses of the stuff.

Well, I used to use an Ayurvedic toothpaste from Wilderness Family Naturals called Superivicky or something like that, but they stopped carrying it. I found something similar at a health food store and it was gross. I looked into buying tooth soap and the first one I found was so expensive, like 60 bucks or so. I remembered someone on here saying that they just used Dr. Bronner's castile soap in peppermint. I thought that would be yucky at the time, but then realized that it had the same basic ingredients as the tooth soap. So I bought a tiny bottle of the peppermint for about a dollar, and I love it! It only takes a couple of drops, so the bottle will last me a year or something. It has a great peppermint flavor, and it is all natural, and best of all, it doesn't taste yucky to me! So thanks to whomever recommended it, I am sooo happy with it!

We use the Eco-Dent toothpowder. I always used to have issues with my gums, but since switching have noticed marked improvement.

Well, im curing my cavities by taking my cod liver oil (soon to switch to fermented cod liver oil soon as I finished this bottle) and getting in ridiculous amounts of raw and/or grassfed butter and raw milk. I use toothsoap and i oil pull in the mornings before brushing my teeth.
