This is a spin-off from this thread which got me thinking, I wonder how many drs give their patients vaccines themselves, or do they hire a nurse to do it?

any comments from anyone why doctors would or would not give their own vaccines to patients would be appreciated. My own ped practice hires nurses to give all vaccines- and they are given after doc leaves the room (and your appt is officially "over" with the doc)

Because administering injections (vaccine or otherwise),administering other meds (oral or IV), drawing blood and other labs, taking vitals is customarily thought to be a function of nursing.

Our ped has a 'shot nurse.' She has said it's because she doesn't want to be seen as the bad guy.

Other, of course.

Where I live (Alberta), vaccines aren't administered at doctor's offices. You have to go to the public health clinic and have it done by nurses there.

Other. I'm in Alberta too. I don't vax anymore but when we did vax DS 1 we had to go to the clinic to get the vaxes. They can be persistant in calling you to make appointments to come in. Very annoying.

our ped does it, but a lot of the times he even does the baby well check up weigh in and measurements himself. he likes to be very hands on with his patients so that he knows them adn the families better

My kids were vaxed on a slow schedule back in the middle 90's. Part of the reason I choose this doctor was that he gave the shots himself!

The drs used to do them at our old ped office. A friend of mine said the nurses do them at her drs, and at the one visit she hit a vein or something, because blood started going everywhere. It made me wonder, if there was a complication, who is accountable-the nurse, the dr or the parent?

They only called about DD once, when she was about 9 months old. I told them I was delaying until two (which was our plan at the time) and they wrote it in her chart. She asked if I wanted to come in and talk to them or get info, which I declined (I am sure I have already read everything they have and it is all pro-vax anyway) and that was it. We'll see if they get around to calling after her second birthday.

And then a few days later they did call again, but this time it was about me. My pre-natal bloodwork showed no titres against CP so she was calling to see if I wanted to come in for the vax. I declined again, and that was that.

I can see if you just put it off indefinitely or didn't return calls they could get annoying, but I didn't have a problem.
