Cooking while wearing 6 month old?

Does anyone wear their baby while cooking? If so, what kind of carrier/wrap do you use and how do you wear the baby? My 6mo DD gets really crabby right around the same time I need to be cooking dinner, and it takes me forever to make a meal when I have to stop every couple of minutes to pick her up from wherever she is. I'm obviously not willing to leave her to cry just so I can put dinner on the table! But I think if I could find a way to wear her - safely - while cooking, my life would be a lot easier late in the afternoon. Does anybody else do this, and how do you manage it? TIA!

I think you're pretty safe as long as the baby is on your back. I do this with a wrap, but any carrier that goes on the back should be fine.

I only do it while in a backcarry and if I absolutely have to... so I have done it maybe 3 or 4 times in 3 years.

did it all the time, i was a single mama both times i had a baby and had no choice. newborns are pretty much safe in any carry as long as you arent worried about grease spatter or carrying boiling pots, but by six months i did it with them on my back

I wore/wear my babies on my back... also when they are in a high chair I would pull that in the general kitchen area near me and give little finger foody treats or odds and ends spoons/spatulas stuff like that to keep them occupied..

All. the. time. Most often on my hip or front (mine's just six months now).

I wear DS on my back almost every night in an ergo. He is 10.5 months old, very mobile, and very into everything. It is safer for him to be on my back than under my feet, reaching up to the counters, opening cabinets and shutting them on his fingers...you get the picture. The only thing I won't cook with him back there is bacon, so if I need bacon I cook it in the oven.

This is what I do. put the kiddo in a high chair or let them run around the bottom. Our kitchen is large and the cabinets are baby proofed so I dont mind him running around my feet while I cook.

I think much of it depends on what you are cooking. If I was just mixing stuff for baking like cakes and stuff that would be no problem. But if I am frying or sauteeing I know that even I get splashed sometimes... so I sure dont wear a baby then.

i just started wearing my son on my back, so i will be wearing him while i cook, but i would never do it with him on the front. when my older DS was about 9 months old, that is the reason i bought a becco! he wanted to be held every night right when i tried to cook dinner. i needed to be able to hold him and cook.

Hm, seems I'm alone in this. But I wont wear DS while cooking. Even on my back. There's just too much of a risk of something happening, and my cargo is too precious to risk it.

you are not necessarily alone in this i have done it less times times than i can count on one hand in 3 years... one of the first thing about babywearing for ME is safety. I also do not believe in doing things like mowing the lawn while babywearing either though.

Most of my cooking is done with baby on my back in the wrap. We wouldn't be eating much, otherwise!

pak

fron or back, in an ergo every night. front only if its something safe for her to be involved in. like salads. shes 9 mo.

this is exactly the reason I bought my Ergo! So I could cook dinner while wearing the baby. It is his fussy time of day as well.

In the ergo wearing on back is the only way I would cook while wearing DS. And I don't ever do this when cooking with oily stuff that can splatter (like homemade meatballs) I do that when DS is sleeping.

My 19 mth old mostly plays in or around the kitchen now when I cook, but I used to wear him on my back most nights. Pretty much the only way I could get food to the table! I guess I never worried too much about anything splattering him as his arms and legs were covered by his clothes or the wrap and his face was behind me. Months of cooking this way and we never had any injuries. (of course we weren't deep frying or anything)

For me, I frequently find it safer to put ds on my back when I cook than to leave him playing on the floor. Another bonus is that he often falls asleep back there!

I still end up wearing DD on my back while cooking sometimes. It's far safer than having her running about my feet and she usually won't consent to being trapped in,well anything. I use a Beco. I usually don't fry things, so there isn't really a spatter problem. I can't see how she's going to get hurt while I'm chopping things for the crockpot or a salad, or tossing something in the oven with her on my back. She's been back there for probably 50% of the meals I've cooked since she was 5-6mo. Before that I did some cooking with her on my front, but back then she actually liked her swing so I could use that some too.
