I just saw a preview the other night and they are making this book into a movie! I am eager to see it and maybe to re-read the book.

Whew I don't know. I did enjoy the book but there were definitely parts that were very difficult to read, and I do not want to see that on a large screen. I hope that they do it well, but I really don't think that I'll be able to see it.

Me too. Such a good book, but I don't know that I want to see some of the scenes. I will probably rent it though--that way I can turn it off if I need to.

Maybe I'll read it again first. The preview was I don't know haunting. THey really had the mood of it quite well.

One of my fav books of all time. I am also pensive to see it though. I think I will wait for the initial reviews.

Has anyone seen this yet? Just curious if it was on par with the amazing book.

Well, the book has an amazing story. Hope the movie lives up to the expectations of one of the finest work on paper!

Just an interesting note: the production company found that their target audience wasn't who they first thought it would be.

"The Lovely Bones" has all the adornments of a prestige drama aimed at adults. It was made by an Oscar-winning director, adapted from an acclaimed novel and features weighty subject matter.

Given that pedigree, Paramount Pictures was stunned to discover that the film's most promising target audience is teen and college-aged girls.

I'm not positive.... but it is the opinion of my 16 year old daughter and myself that the movie folks took out the rape parts of the book. I think that changes the story a good bit. I'm not sure that I will see this film.

See - I'm torn. I was sure that I didn't want to see this movie because it was just horrific for me to read about, there was no way I wanted to see that. Then I just saw the Lord of the Rings movies and my respect for Jackson right now it through the roof. Then I read that they kept trying to storyboard the initial attack/rape/murder and just couldn't do it. Staff was walking out of the room disturbed, so they decided to not put it in the movie. The murder is obviously a huge part of the story(, and yes I think that they left the rape out) but it's not shown. I know that it deviates from the book, but I firmly agree that there are things that I simply do not need to see. I think that as a society we have gotten so callous regarding violence that we want to "see" things that no one should ever see! Now I feel like I should go see the movie to support Jackson. Hmmmmm

I came to really dislike the book, but must admit that the film looks pretty awesome. I have a feeling that the rape/murder scene will likely be hinted at, rather than shown in any great detail. I'm looking forward to watching it.

The rape and the murder aren't filmed. I find it wrong. The book isn't an easy to book to read at all. I found it very difficult emotionally to get through it. But the book is about what happens in the aftermath of such a horrendous act of violence. To not show it, to gloss over it is wrong. The movie is based on the book and to take that away changes the movie. My two cents. People who haven't read the book won't really understand what happened. Color me unimpressed by the film and I say that as a huge LOTR fan.

I've seen the trailer and I'm interested in seeing the movie. I'm encouraged by the casting of Saoirse Ronan as Susie. If she gets the accent right, I think she'll do a good job in the role.

I thought it was a very good book, although there was at least one scene that disappointed me - where she inhabits/invades someone else's living body. It just seemed like a bad choice on the part of the author. if there's one scene that I hope is missing from the movie, it's that one.

I'm not too disturbed that the violence will be left to the audience's imagination. I think it's a directorial/creative decision that can be managed quite effectively, rather than graphically showing every detail.

I just watched this movie today (my grandmother wanted to take me, otherwise I wouldn't have went!) In Canada, this movie is only rated PG which I think is crazy. There is no rape scene or violent attack, although it is alluded to. It is a very haunting movie and very disturbing. I can't stop thinking about it!

I saw it too and I would never take my 8 yr old to see it! I liked it but Im a sucker for Peter Jackson, pretty colored things and good soundtracks.

The critics did NOT like it.

I saw the movie but have not read the book, IMO the movie was horrible! I can see where the book would be better because there were parts that needed an explanation. No mention or even hint that she was raped. I take it she was in the book? Just shows her being pulled from the stairs and thats about it. I really wish they would have found her body. Again I;m not sure how the book ended but in the movie it was really odd that they had all this build up to where her body was and then poof nothing. Also in the movie they kept focusing on part of her charm bracelet he kept as a souvenir and nobody found it or anything- just a let down. I htink the big part that creeped me out or was a let down was that when they showed her in her heaven or in between whatever she seemed so lonely and scared and cold.

Yes, the book is much more straight forward about the rape although there aren't (thankfully!) any graphic details.

They never find her body in the book either. All they find is a part of her elbow bone.

i am excited to see the movie even though the reviews are bad.

I'm torn about seeing this movie. I actually didn't really like the book much. Not because of the violence. I just didn't think it was that good. But I really like Peter Jackson. The previews looked meh and the reviews aren't good, so I'll just wait for dvd. But I'm still interested to hear what others thought of the movie.

I have a copy of Lovely Bones bookmarked to watch online. Really good copy too. shh!! I may not watch it though, I'm not too fussy on the actress who plays Susie Salmon.

I was 7 1/2 months pregnant with my youngest son when I read it, and boy was I a slobbering mess reading it. But I still LOVED it. It's one of my favorite reads of all time!!
