I need some serious nighttime diaper help!

I'm about to go crazy with the nighttime diaper leaks! If I wake up one more time in a damn spot I'm going to scream. DS is in a sposie tonight because I don't feel like washing sheets again tomorrow and I swear my mattress is starting to smell like pee. We're not using a waterproof cover because I can't sleep with it on there, but we do have a matress pad to help absorb any leaking.

And just a side note - tonight was the first time my dh has ever put a sposie on ds before and he was totally confused, he thinks prefolds and snappis are worlds easier

OK, so for a while we were doing fuzzi bunz and BGOS at night with MF inserts or hemp or both, that worked for a while but as ds got bigger they were leaking out the legs like crazy and the BG aplix started to suck big time. The aplix was coming undone because it would curl back and rub against his pajamas until it totally came off - talk about a big puddle of pee! So I got rid of those and tried goodmamas at night - totally not absorbent enough and would be dripping wet in the morning and leak out of any cover (and we've never had leaks with our covers before). Since then we've been trying various fitteds - cricketts, bsrbs, happy hempys, sandy's, etc. The one thing that seems to work most often is a prefold trifolded around an insert or two and then layed in a cover. I don't like that all the fitteds and the prefold thing have wetness against his skin though. I am thinking about ordering the microsued 'sock' off of cottonbabies to stuff inserts into. Or maybe just making my own. I was also thinking about getting a pull on wool cover like aristocrats or disana - but what would I put inside it? I couldn't do the trifolded prefold or the sock but maybe I could do a fitted with an insert and a piece of fleece on top to keep it dry against his skin.

OK, sorry about the novel here but I need help and I'm starting to feel like I've tried everything!

We do a prefold trifolded down the center of another and then a pul cover the dipe is totally saturated by morning. You could always lay a piece of fleece between baby and dipe. I change first thing in the morning and wash her bottom and let dry before diapering again and she fine although every baby is different. Good luck!

I most often used a snappi'ed prefold with either a happypants fleece cover (by polar babies), stacinator fleece cover, or blue penguin poso. I found those covers helped keep leaks off the bed the best (I've used the blue penguin - same as motherease, I think, with pocket diapers inside it too since it's pretty lightweight as far as covers go).

If you like fitteds, and haven't tried hemp inserts/doublers with them - I'd consider that too, especially the hemp babies ones. I also found using them on top of the pocket dipe on the inside seemed to help too.

Something else for the bed you could think about (that we use now sometimes post-PL) is an old wool blanket with a sheet laid ontop of it on top of the sheeted mattress. If there's an accident, we just swipe them off and the bed's still dry, and it doesn't feel as uncomfortable to sleep on as the waterproof mattress pads. (In fact it's quite warm. Keep meaning to make my own wool/sheet bed pad, but haven't gotten to it yet).

Goodmama or other fitted with an extra hemp doubler with Disana pull-on over it works great for us and DD2 is a SUPER PEE-ER. She exploded a disposable once with her night time pee. Figure out where the pee is coming out most and pad it up there with whatever you've got. DD2 sleeps on her tummy so I put everything up front for her, she looks like a weeble LOL. We also use a fleece liner, it keeps her skin drier and you can put a bit of diaper cream on.

I think the Disana is more absorbent than the Aristocrat, having tried both.

We've had good luck with Dappi nylon pull-on pants with fitteds. You can pull them on over something else if you need to.

The only thing that has been able to get my little guy through the night is a prefold trifolded in another prefold, topped with a fleece liner to protect his skin from the wet, and the whole thing in an Imse Vimse cover. A close second though is my Sugar Peas Pea in a Pod 2 layer interlock cover (wool) with an extra insert laid in the wet zone, the whole thing topped in fleece. This will get him about 7 hours before he's uncomfortable.

As for the wet bed, I have a wool changing pad that I folded in half, put a prefold in between the two layers and put the little guy on that. It protects the bed, and the prefold will absorb any excess moisture. Since I did that, I haven't had to worry about the sheets from his diaper - only from spit-up.

This is my no-fail dry bum, dry bed nighttime diaper system:

Green Acre Designs one-size semi-fitted, stuffed with 3 inserts (whatever you already have is fine, I like one microfiber and 2 hemp), Snappied on, with a Dancing Bears fleece soaker on top. We have never had a wet bed with this, and the baby feels dry.

My DD (18 mos) has been soaking through disposables every.single.night for quite some time which is making me consider cloth even though we can't CD full time (daycare).

I am looking to buy a pocket diaper with inserts. Good to know fleece covers exist.

I'm thinking pocket diaper (any recs?) plus prefold plus hemp inserts plus fleece cover? Is microfiber more absorbent than a prefold?

Side note - will I be able to get my child's clothing over that huge diaper? Will she be comfortable enough?

I think pocket diaper plus a fleece cover is overkill, and with the PUL of the pocket, you will lose the comfortable breathability of the fleece. To really save money, you could do 2 prefolds Snappied on, fleece liner, and fleece cover. I wouldn't rely on a pocket at night - usually to get enough absorbency for a heavy wetter, you have to stuff it so full that you get leaking at the legs. Fitteds or prefolds would really be better. The GAD semi-fitted is totally lined with fleece so it will feel like a stay-dry pocket inside.

I've only had time to skim briefly through the other responses - so I apologize if this is redundant:

With regards to not being able to sleep on a waterproof cover on your mattress: I have a small wool puddle pad that I put on top of the sheet (bought it for the cradle we ended up never using) in the "baby zone". On top of that, I have a fleece blanket that covers the entire mattress, so we're lying directly on top of that. We've had many night leaks, and not one of them has made it through to the sheet. I don't think the wool puddle pad even really needs to be there, as the fleece blanket really keeps the moisture from going through. Also, the fleece always feels dry after a quick wipe with a prefold diaper, so I don't have to deal with any cleanup until we get up in the morning (have to change the baby's clothes and diaper, of course, because they're wet...but don't have to change the bedding).

Hope that helps.

We used a Sandy's diaper with a trifolded prefold folded around a hemp insert and put in DD's crotch. Then I put a wool cover or a Motherease cover over it. It worked really well for us.

For leaks that make it through to the mattress, try Nature's Miracle enzyme cleaner. It's for pets, but it also takes out baby pee smells almost instantly! And for what it's worth, I have also had success with vomit and breastmilk stains using that cleaner. You can buy it at Tractor Supply or Petsmart.

All we do is use 2 inserts, a hemp and a micro AND a wonder wrap onesize cover. No leaks : )
