Speech Therapy @ Home?

Thread Starter
I have a 4 year old son who was started in speech therapy at 2.5. It helped him a lot, and after a few months his speech exploded and he was finally saying some real words. Then, we moved and speech therapy wasn't available for kids unless they were over 3... So we waited and then moved shortly after he turned 3 so decided not to get involved in something we'd have to leave soon.

So, we've bought a house and I want to get him back into speech therapy but was wondering how possible it would be to do this at home. Its not somthing I've really looked in to. His issues are basically enunciation at this point (I think) and how he says his words. He speaks a lot, but he's not very clear. His v's sound like d's (I want to see a moo-die, instead of movie), he can't make a 'sh' or 'th' sound, and there are a couple other sounds that are not correct. Sometimes he gets to talking and you can't really understand what he says, especially peoplee who are not around him and don't understand his way of speaking.

How can I help him? Are there resources online/books or is this something that speech therapy would be more beneficial coming from a professional rather than at home?

I found the site http://mommyspeechtherapy.com/
while looking for at home speech therapy information. My oldest was in speech therapy when she went to school (graduated before we withdrew) and my two boys also need extra help with some sounds/words so I was looking for something that would show me how to do that at home.

There is also a website at http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/phonetics/
that has animations of how the mouth/tongue work while making sounds.

Wow this never occurred to me!! dd didn't qualify for speech (not enough of a delay). But there are a couple of sounds that are difficult for her to say and she's old enough now to have it bother her a bit. I'm checking into these. You momma's are awesome!

You didn't go into that much detail about your ds's pronunciation, but what you mentioned - difficulty with v, th and sh - sounds age-appropriate to me.

We were able to get speech therapy for 4yods through the school system, even though he's not in school. The speech therapist comes to us three times a week and works with him.

Theo is 4 this week.

we do speech therpay via the school distrcit, but we do go to the school. our choice, we could have requested miss Em come here.

Theo has an IEP. When he was 3.5 his speech was at an 18 month level, he was 100% not verbal at that point. He had a explosion of speech at 7 to 9 months past 3 .. and now at 4 he is amazing ... but still at least 2 years behind. we go 6 times a month.

i will have to go back and look at the links posted here.

thanks

(i am happy to talk about Theo's ST adn working with early intervention and now the school, we are into it with our younger son too, )
