Can we talk about MSG & the sneaky names for it?

Does anyone have a trusted source revealing the different names in which MSG appears in ingredient lists? I thought it was just monosodium glauacamate (sp?), hydrolyzed yeast extract...? Are there more?

Ps. Obviously the best way to avoid it is not to eat *any* packaged foods...We do eat a whole-foods-based diet, but there are a couple of things we still rely on...

Thanks, you guys. Appreciate it.

This is so depressing. So, let me change my Q a bit, what do people who want to avoid MSG *do*? Do you really not eat ANY processed foods? It seems, now, that almost EVERYTHING contains MSG-type additives. This is seriously depressing. Carageenan? Really? That's in my kid's rice milk.
Knowledge is depressing.

Thanks, MDC.

I don't think all carageenan has msg. It might depend on the company. But yeah, we avoid almost all processeed food aside from rice crackers that have 3 ingredients, all of which I know what they are. We don't eat out either hardly ever either except for a place that has local food.

Wow this is scary. I see "gelatin" on this list. So does this mean that all my supplements with gelatin capsules contain msg?

I have a lot of trouble w/ msg and i avoid absolutely all foods under the "always" list from truth in labeling and most of the foods under the "sometimes" list. i make my own stock, sauces, tomato gravy, etc. we started baking a lot and making more things homemade to control the ingredients. we do granola, bread, muffins, etc. no processed side dishes...i make my rice pilaf from scratch w/ my own stock and we eat a lot more yams, potatos, veggies. the hardest part is eating on the go. i have to plan ahead and i eat a lot of the same thing over and over.

for me, the hardest ingredient to figure out is "natural flavoring". sometimes i am fine with it, but i am always skeptical and never overdo it on foods with that ingredient. i get so frustrated with the many organic or supposedly healthful brands that include various forms of msg. but i do my best to avoid them!
