How do I figure out clothing sizes for a newborn w/cds?

I'm planning on buying an outfit or two for our LO to come home from the hospital/spend his/her first few days in. We've already found a ton of great condition sleep gowns from a local thrift shop, so I'll all set with roomy sleep wear. I was thinking of tie dying a bunch of onesies and buying a pair or two of overalls to go with them.... I'm already planning on buying those snap-in extenders for the onesies... but what size should I buy for the stuff? This is our first kiddo so I'm already going to be flying a bit on the blind side with sizing... and I'm not sure if I should be buying a size up because of the dipes. I'm planning on starting out with Green Mountain Prefolds and Thirsties/Bummis covers if that gives any kind of reference... what would you gals do?

I used prefolds (infant size) and Litwrap or ImseVimse Soft covers. 0-3 clothes fit just fine. He was 8 lbs 8 oz at birth. HTH!

Start with 0-3 months. All my kids were big babies and although dd was 9 lb 9 oz at birth, she did fit into some NB sized onesies, etc. but not for long. Honestly, I didn't put her in outfits too much in the early weeks just b/c it was so much more convenient to have her wear the gowns (which is what I did for all my kids). I haven't run into any problems with sizing and cd's except with jeans. Other than that, most stuff has fit fine over her dipes (we use pf's and bummis covers as well). If you feel like you need to have your LO wear outfits, lap tees and knit pants/overalls will be your best bet!

A lot depends on the size of your babe, but I think even with cloth, most babies will fit in 0-3 mo. stuff just fine. ds2 was 7lb3oz at birth and a lot of the nb stuff was still too big for him, even with cds. Not for long, though! He's fat and happy now, and wearing 9 mo. clothes at 3 mo!

You the size of a newborn is suprisingly small in most cases. I had a NB outfit choosen it was soooo TINY and I remember thinking wow there is NO way a baby will fit this I made DH go and get something in the next size cause I was sooo sure... Then DD came home 5lbs 10oz 18 inches and when we put that outfit on her (with a sposie yes) her entire boby fit with in the neck I could have double diapered her with toddler prefold and thick wool soakers and that outfit would have still been big.

Like others said, we found that even with Thirsties and prefolds, our little guy's butt is still small enough to fit into 0-3m. He was a fairly big newborn (about 9lbs) and 0-3m stuff was still HUGE on him at the beginning.

I second what everyone said. My 4 wk old dd was just under 9 lb and 22 in long at birth, yet I brought her home in a NB size outfit from Gymboree (knit pants and shirt/cardigan set) that was still a bit too large for her then. She's just now outgrowing it and starting to look good in Carter's 3 mo. sizes (which are still too big).

2wks before DD was born, they told me she was 8+lbs already, so I put a newborn and a 0-3mo outfit in my bag because I was worried that the nb wouldn't fit. She was born 7lb 11oz, 21" long (yay for ultrasound estimates...) and the nb outfit was too big. She'd grown into it by 2wks old, and outgrown it by 3-4wks old though. Then she outgrew the 0-3months stuff by 6wks and the 3-6months stuff by 3months... By 6 months she was wearing 9-12months clothes. That was all in CD.

NB size. But I would recommend no snap-crotch clothes. Even with the extenders, the issue is that the fabric will get into the leg openings of the diaper and wick. Plus it is a total PITA to have so much work in dressing and undressing a baby!
