"No Child Left Unimmunized Against Flu Act of 09"

Just wanted to give heads up to other non-vaxing mamas. The Health Care Bill (HR-3962) that just passed in the house this weekend contains a couple provisions related to enforcing immunizations. Here is the govtrack link:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-2596

This act is located in section 2524, page 1391. Should this become law, our elementary and secondary schools could become flu vaccination centers.

I hope posting this doesn't violate the no-politics rule. I just felt that it was pertinent to the vax discussions, especially for those against flu vaccines (like myself).

chilling. When this whole thing started and some mamas on MDC were saying this was just a buildup for forced immunization I thought it was a bit extreme (sorry mamas ). Now...I believe it 100%.

I'm not defending the bill because if they mandated my children receive the flu vaccine to attend school I'd pull them out but this is in the bill summary:
Quote:
Makes participation by a school or an individual voluntary
so they are not forcing your kids to get vaccinated against the flu...yet.

VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION- Participation in the demonstration program by a school or an individual shall be voluntary.
A lot of schools already have flu shot clinics and it would be voluntary. Doesn't bother me.

Some states require that homeschoolers follow the same vax laws.

If they are vaccinating for the flu would they use the flu mist also? I'd worry about all of that being in one area - throughout the school at once, even if I had declined my own children to get the shot.

A quick search for my state has not brought up anything about vaccinations required for homeschoolers.

Our school already does this. This is nothing new.

Ours does. All of the schools through our area do the mist, and have for a couple of years now. They are doing the H1N1 mist this year too, in the schools. Our preschools also do this.

I don't like it either, but it's nothing new.

Vaccines have always been given at schools. That is a fact.

However, it has never been part of a federal healthcare law. This is the camel's nose under the tent.

The schools here have been doing it a long time now choice of vax or mist. It does bother me however that I have to keep my kids home because I cannot trust them to follow my wishes and not vax my kids.

Vaccinations are required for homeschoolers here in Virginia.

It says voluntary, but the title of the act kind of seems to imply the no child will... be left behind. I realize that schools have already been turned into flu vac centers, especially since the whole H1N1 thing... but why do they feel the need to include this in the bill then? This is speculation, but they must have something else in mind other than what is already being done. Unless they just needed the funding to continue doing it, so they put in there to qualify for the money. At any rate, perhaps non-vaxing moms could contact their senators and ask them about this- and ask them to amend the bill to get rid of it?

Another issue I have with this is that our taxes will be going to fund this program... meaning my money is going to promote and issue vaccines. I know that it probably does already in some way, but this is on a bigger scale. That really bothers me because I HATE those dumb flu commercials- and the vax propaganda on kids shows (Sid the Science Kid, Seasme Street) makes me sick.

I will be homeschooling my children but I will be watching this issue carefully. I don't know if there is anything else in the bill that has to do with vax's... but a large portion is dedicated to preventative care, which vax's would fall under. There are a lot of rumors but i havent had time to fact check so i wont post anything yet.

The elementary school right up the road has been being used for a flu vax center during school hours. I just recently pulled my boys to homeschool (unrelated issue) but their last week at the school there was a big vaccine day for the swine flu-the shot, not the mist. I was not pleased to say the least.

In my opinion, this is all working up to a very strong legal *nudge* for vaccines-I don't think they will make it MANDATORY per se, but I do believe they will make it very difficult to refuse, even moreso than it already is.

I absolutely agree with this. This is how the government works. Create a huge disturbance, then create a solution to fix it by writing new legislature that is so long and complicated that they can sneak in laws that violate your Constitutional rights.

It happened with 9/11 and Homeland Security and now it's happening with H1N1.

I took a good look at the bill text. Even if you agree with the flu vaccine, it is a total waste of taxpayer money. It is to study the feasibility of making schools vaccine clinics, and would be in affect for the next 2 school years. The govenment would buy vaccine and coordinate with insurers to ensure that children with health insurance have adequate coverage for flu vaccines.. So this is a small scale demonstration program to prove that vaccinating in schools is a viable option and will work. Just a complete and total waste of taxpayer funds.

Wouldn't this be like any other vax that you could opt out of w/ a waiver?
