diaper genie/diaper pails

i think i will be doing disposables and looking into a diaper genie or other type diaper trash can. but i'm wondering if it's really necessary to have a special diaper pail like diaper genie. can't i just throw the diapers out everyday with the trash? is that bad?

That should be fine, but if you have dogs I would recommend a locking or flap lid

I would be kind of afraid of stink-issues with a regular trash can. We used disposables for 15 months with DS, and the diapers stunk horribly when we would open up the diaper champ to empty it. That said, I use a regular (open) trash can for our cloth diapers and we do not have an odor problem. But, the cloth diapers kinda dry-out sitting in there causing them to stink less.

We did love the diaper champ when we used disposables. It was easy to manage with one hand and could use any type of bag (trash bag, store bag, grocery bag, etc).

We started out using a Diaper Champ, but it didn't last. I don't know if our Champ was defective or if they generally suck. But it kept getting stuck when we tried to slip it. Eventually we got sick of it and just started using an open garbage can. We empty it pretty regularly and haven't had a problem with stink.

I tried the Diaper Genie when DS was new, but hated it. I ended up switching to a much cheaper kind that I got at Toys R Us, which I like much better. Now that DD is in cloth, I just use a Thirsties pail liner in it, and it works wonderfully!

Here's another vote against the Diaper Genie. Waste of money and what a pain! I also used a Diaper Champ, which was better because I could use my own regular plastic garbage bags. But yeah, disposable diapers will stink no matter what you dispose of them in.

I used disposables exclusively with DD and until 15 months with DS1. I had a diaper champ when DS1 was little. It didn't really hold the smell in very well.

I had to used disposables with DS2 recently because of yeast rash. I used the 13 gallon trash can, that I usually put a pail liner in, and just used a garbage sack instead. It worked just as well.

we use the diaper champ and for us it works really well. It's nice not to have to run outside and toss out a poopy diaper daily so it doesn't smell the house up. (in the beginning the poopy diapers didn't smell because they were BF poops. but now that solids are here the poops really stink) For the really bad poopy diapers I'll use the little diaper sacks and throw them in the diaper pail. In the beginning we would only need to take the pail out about once every two weeks. Now it's weekly. I disinfect mine once a month. I like that I can use regular trash bags I purchase at the dollar store instead of the diaper genie 5.00 refill stuff. Saves us money! For us the diaper champ is awesome. What you have to remember is that the wipes will get stuck in the champ and make it hard for you to turn the handle. So I just wrap the wipes in the diaper and toss the diaper out and it works perfect. No issues here.
