Eating off mom's plate...

This is almost a parenting-type question, but do you let your LO eat off your plate?

DS napped late today and was starving when he woke up. DH served him some leftover chicken stew (one of DS's top-3 meals) while I made our supper. DS ate a good chunk and then indicated he was finished. The tortellini & cheese sauce I was making is also one of DS's top-3 faves, so I knew he'd eat more once we sat down to eat, but what I didn't expect was how MUCH more he'd eat. I thought he'd snack a bit and be done, so I just had him in my lap as opposed to his high-chair, but he ate nearly half my portion PLUS some kernel corn (which normally he won't touch with a 10-ft pole).

I try not to obsess over how much DS eats, but would like to expand his variety as we face increasingly picky-toddler habits. To this end I'm thinking about making this sitting-in-mom's lap eating-off-her-plate thing a more regular occurance. Would this be weird? Any tips on making it a little less messy?

Hmmm, I'm not sure there is a way to make it less messy My DS at 6yo is still a walking mess. I don't get it, don't they FEEL the food all over their face?!

You could lay a plastic table cloth under your chair for easy clean up. I always make bath time right after dinner and leave the table clean up to DH while I wash the kids.

Personally, I have a thing about MY food. I always put extra food on my plate for the kids to eat and then DH comes and eats off my plate too!! Then I barely have any food left for me:/ Oi!!

Mmmm, the tortelini and cheese sauce reminds me of an awsome recipe... add some spicy and sweet sausage, fennel seed, chopped pimento, garlic, cabbage, green onion..... http://www.recipezaar.com/hungry-for...cabbage-384261

I think it's ok if they eat off your plate and you're ok with it. If they see you are eating it, then it can't be that bad, you know?

I'm totally ok with it for now, I'm just wondering if it's a bad habit to start & something I'll regret later...

I also couldn't believe how messy he got ME, not just himself. Granted it was cheese sauce, but I almost had to get in the tub with DS by the time he was done! I had cheese literally up to my elbows.

I have to say, I *hate* having my kids eat off my plate. I'm just neurotic. So, while I will give them bites, I have set a rule that they can share ANYTHING I'm having, but they need their own bowl or to ask me to give it to them. (Mostly this is because they always reach with their grubby little hands.)

Anyway, my daughter, who is 3, now ALWAYS asks "own bowl" and will eat anything if it comes off my plate or from the same pot.

But my kids have always been adventurous eaters and eat the same things as we do.
