Doing longer stretches at first then back to 1-2 hours

We've had a rough five months of 1-2 hourly wakings but for the last week DS has started to do better for the first stretch of the night. He has consistently been sleeping 2-3 hours but after that first wake up, he's back to every 1-2 hours. Even though he wakes a lot, he may only nurse twice.

We cosleep in a family bed and DS starts the night off there without us. I don't think it has to do with me entering the room.

Any ideas how to make this longer stretch repeat itself throughout the night?
