The reed diffusers are good in winter (in summer it's easier just to leave the window open).
I bought one of those plug in diffusers last winter and my Dad visited - he pulled it out and threw it away, telling me that they're responsible for a large number of fires. Apparently if the firemen are called the first thing they look for are the plug in diffuers. If the oil runs out and you don't realise and keep it plugged in, they can overheat and catch alight. The fire runs up the inside of the wall and into the roof, so the whole house can be engulfed really quickly.
