Canadian Home Birth Study - Sept 09

Canadian Home Birth Study Finds Home Birth As Safe or Safer Than Hospital Birth
http://www.mothering.com/canadian-homebirth-study

I saw this on Mothering and thought I would dig deeper and found the original study here:

http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/181/6-7/377

Most of the studies I have seen in the past have been older studies or done in European countries. It's nice to see something from closer to home.

Thanks for the link!

now if only we had enough midwives or doctors to do home births I'd be really REALLY happy

Agreed...we need lots more. Otherwise priority for homebirthers should be given. It's too hard to get into a mw practice.

I do very much appreciate that study though!

Yay! I agree, we've been hard up for recent relevant studies... It seems that every other one I've been able to find is either terribly out of date, or doesn't take into account *planned* homebirths, vs accidental.

And BC is cutting funding to the midwifery program at UBC. It infuriates me.

Also, until hospitals can do somthing about the MSRA and other superbugs, the statistics will continue to favour homebirth for no other reason than the avoidance of infection.

WHAT?! Gah. Every now and then my brain toys with the idea of pushing past my doula training and going to school for midwifery, but we don't have a school in MB, so until they get one (5+ years), if I made the decision, I'd have to go to BC. I need MORE funding, not less!

BC's cutting funding all over the place. When you're hosting the Olympics and trying to prove that you're a "world class city", it's hard to find the money to be a "world class city". Give it a few years - maybe things will pick up a little...I hope...
