I spent quite a while participating in these threads, particularly the NCSS support thread and just wanted to share a bit of our success. Hopefully it will help someone else through a bad day.
For as long as I can remember, DD was a 30-40 minute napper. On the dot, not a minute longer. Worse, these 30-40 minutes snoozes didn't seem to be enough for her. Around 3 months, when a 3-nap-a-day schedule started appearing I started intervening. I tried wearing her, holding her, and the swing with varying degrees of success. From about 3 months to 6 months I held her for almost every nap and managed to eek out 1 to 1.5 hour naps about 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, I had to really try hard not to get emotional and upset about 'failing' to provide her with a good nap. Around 6 months when I could tell we were switching to 2 naps per day I started using the NCSS techniques. Again, I got longer naps about 80% of the time, but how freakin' annoying to have to be in there at 30 minutes ON THE DOT. It never failed that if I missed her stirring, she was up for good.
Now, in the last month she is suddenly napping for MORE than an hour twice a day without any assistance! And she is doing all this despite a two-week bout of teething that resulted in three new teeth. I know this success may not be permanent, but I am beyond thrilled. For now I am making the most of this amazing respite! I don't know if it was NCSS or just my baby growing up, but wow, what a relief... bring on baby #2!!! (totally kidding!! LOL!!)
